Try Try Try
The Smashing Pumpkins Lyrics

Pop tart
What's our mission
Do we know
But never listen
For too long
They held me under
But I hear
It's almost over
In Detroit
On a Memphis train
Like you said it's

Down in the heat and the summer rain of
The automatic gauze of your memories
Down in the sleep at the airplane races
Try to hold on
To this heart
A little bit longer
Try to hold on
To this love aloud
Try to hold on
For this heart's
A little bit colder
Try to hold on
To this love
Paperback scrawl your hidden poems
Written around the dried out flowers
Here we are still trading places
To try to hold on

Pop tart
Can you envision
A free world
Of clear division
For too long
They held us under
But I know
We're getting over
In Detroit
With the Nashville tears
Like you said it's

Down in the heat with the broken numbers
Down in the gaze of solemnity
Down in the way you've held together
To try to hold on
To this heart
A little bit closer
Try to hold on
To this love aloud
Try to hold on
For this heart's
A little bit older
Try to hold on
To this love aloud

And we are still alive
Try to hold on
And we have survived
Try to hold on
And no one should deny
We tried to hold on to the pulse of the feedback current
Into the flow of encrypted movement
Slapback kills the ancient remnants
That try to hold on

Try to hold on
To this heart alive
Try to hold on
To this love aloud
Try to hold on
And we are still alive
Try to hold on
And we have survived
Try to hold on

Pop tart
You never listen
Skinned knees
Try to hold on
Stop start
What's our mission

Skinned knees
Try to hold on

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Smashing Pumpkins’ “Try Try Try” are shrouded in ambiguity, but the songwriter Billy Corgan sheds light on the song. The song's storyline follows that of a drug addict who is trying to hold on to love despite his addiction. The opening line, “Pop Tart, what’s our mission? Do we know but never listen,” refers to the temporary high that drugs give, and how addicts are aware of the destruction drugs bring but choose to ignore those thoughts. The lines “For too long they held me under, but I hear it’s almost over,” may represent the promises of stopping drugs and starting a new life, but this message is never realized.

The lines “Down in the sleep at the airplane races, try to hold on to this heart a little bit longer,” suggests that the singer is clinging to the hope that love will cure his addiction, and with its help, he can hold on to life a little bit longer. “Paperback scrawl your hidden poems, written around the dried-out flowers,” references to secret journal writings of the singer, which are, in reality, hidden drug usage or poetry that personifies drug addiction. The lyric "skinned knees, try to hold on, stop-start, what's our mission” is a plea to his partner to hold on to the relationship, despite the attempts and failures of the singer to get sober.

Have you listened to Oceania and Monuments To An Elegy?

In my opinion, those albums hearken back to the days of old.

They will never be as popular as Siamese Dream or Melancholy And The Infinite Sadness.

In pretty convinced many fans ears are clogged with nostalgia, and they wouldn't like anything Smashing Pumpkins release.

I honestly think if Siamese Dreams was released in 2017 instead of 1993, people would be calling it trash.

The new singles wont get played on the radio because the radio stations only play the same ten or twenty songs again and again on repeat.

Also, remember, many fans hated Adore and despised Machina and Machina 2.

Omg....
That just broke my heart...

I am a recovered addict. I was pregnant and still drinking and using and the father of my first child was (and still is) a junky as well!
This video hit home so hard! The insanity of being in active addiction! The pure insanity of it all!!

I had my first son taken from me as a direct result of my addiction.
Getting pregnant a second time saved my life! I didn't want to repeat it all again!
I thank God EVERYDAY that I am not who I used to be!

Once again;
This video hit home for me! It broke my heart!
I was living it, but I couldn't see it all from an outside view- until now, that it.

😭😭

This song always makes me cry. Because I listened to it while I was a junkie and couldn’t quit no matter how hard I tried. I was convinced I would die a addict. But with gods help and a lot of fighting sleepless nights I’ve been clean since 2013.

I can’t believe MTV banned this. This is such a strong video with a powerful message. Sad one at that.

@vgpkevin2900

Every bit of inteligence is banned from the media, they want You to see and think only what is good for their agenda

@kaosfactoryamici8444

MTV still exists?

@colinjava8447

Thats the reality of drug addiction for many people, if it gets through to a few people then the video has done its job.
