The Smiths signed to the independent label Rough Trade Records in 1983 and released their first album, The Smiths, in 1984. They based their songs on the songwriting partnership of Morrissey and Marr. Their focus on a guitar, bass, and drum sound and a fusion of 1960s rock and post-punk was a rejection of the synth-pop sound that was predominant at the time. Several Smiths singles reached the top 20 of the UK Singles Chart, and all their studio albums reached the top five of the UK Albums Chart, including the number-one album Meat Is Murder (1985). They achieved mainstream success in Europe with The Queen Is Dead (1986) and Strangeways, Here We Come (1987), both of which entered the top 20 of the European Albums Chart.
Internal tensions led to the Smiths' breakup in 1987, followed by public lawsuits over royalties. Their live album Rank (1988) reached the top 10 in Europe. Since the band's dissolution, the members have refused offers to reunite and have all separately stated that the band is finished and will never reunite.

Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want
The Smiths Lyrics

See, the luck I've had
Can make a good man
Turn bad
So please, please, please
Let me, let me, let me
Let me get what I want
Haven't had a dream in a long time
See, the life I've had
Can make a good man bad
So for once in my life
Let me get what I want
Lord knows, it would be the first time
Lord knows, it would be the first time
The Smiths’ Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want is an introspective song about the hardships of life, the struggles of humanity, and the hope to overcome them. The song is a lament of a man who is beset by bad luck and has not had much to celebrate. The opening line, “good times for a change,” is a hopeful statement that suggests the possibility of something better after a prolonged period of hardship. However, the singer acknowledges that the bad luck he has faced can turn even a “good man” into a “bad” one.
The plea to “let me get what I want” is repeated several times throughout the song, emphasizing the desperation of the singer’s situation. The lack of dreaming for a long time suggests a deep malaise and weariness with life. The words “See, the life I've had can make a good man bad” highlight how the singer has been shaped by past experiences, insinuating that the past had a significant impact on shaping his character.
In the chorus, the line “Lord knows, it would be the first time” is a repeated refrain that adds to the melancholy and pleading tone of the song. The singer seems to have been defeated by life, not having achieved any of his dreams, and is begging for a change in his circumstances. The Smiths’ presentation of the song through Morrissey’s soaring yet plaintive voice, and the delicate guitar licks by Johnny Marr, accentuates the vulnerability and desperation of the words.
