8) The Snakes was a British band that began in 2002 with Messrs Moor and Davies deciding to mess around with a few tunes for a bit of fun. Without intending to take it much further, there emerged a batch of songs, which, with mates Dan Tilbury on drums and Alex Culpin on bass, created a fire that few could resist dancin round. Headlines followed at the Borderline, Jazz Café, Come Down & Meet the Folks, What’s Cookin, and festivals Beyond Nashville and SpydaFest, as well as live sessions on LBC, Mean Country AM, and GWR, and Supports with Robby Faulks, The Gourds, The Redlands Palamino Co, Bill Maloney’s Trophy Wives, Long Riders, and the legendary Tony Joe White. Long time pal Pete Smart joined the band for a tour with Texan troubadour Tommy Hale, temporarily covering on bass for Alex. Pete subsequently became a the fifth member of the Snakes, adding acoustic guitar, vocals and harmonica to their sound, as well as a Wiltshire accent even though he is Canadian... In 2006 the band released its 1st album Songs 1) From The Satellites, which received great reviews, bringing them to the attention of Bob Harris, among others, and earning them a BBC Radio session with Mark Lamarr. Plans for the follow up album were delayed by the departure of bassist Alex (did he jump or was he porsched?) and by the closure of their favourite recording studio and the subsequent setting up of a new studio. With new bassist Johnhhy O, they recorded an EP.
Can't Go Back
The Snakes Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I think I've been here before
Just how well do you know me
I try to run but I can't find the door
I'm all alone in the city
Seems like I'm out of control Ain't no doubt it's a pity, all alone another lost soul
You can't go back
Hold back the years, hold back the tears
You can't go back...
I've got to look for somebody
Seems like I've looked everywhere
I'm always looking for strangers
Can't find myself anywhere
Is there anybody out there
Who can help me find my way
I'm not looking for favours
Who needs them anyway
Hold back the years, hide all your fears
You can't go back
Hold back the years, hold back the tears
You can't go back...
Nowhere to run, I don't want to hide
The comfort of strangers cannot be denied...
(Solo)
Time is moving so slowly, tell me where should I go
I don't know, somebody help me
I'm only searching for home
Hold back the years, hold all your fears
You can't go back
Hold back the years, hold back the tears
You can't go back...
The Snakes’s song Can’t Go Back has a powerful message that may resonate with individuals who have experienced feelings of confusion, loneliness, and hopelessness. The song begins with the singer expressing their sense of déjà vu, as if they’ve been in the same situation before, seeking clarity from others but finding only dead ends. The lyrics at this point may represent the feeling of being lost and unable to find a way out of a challenging situation or time in one’s life.
As the song progresses, the singer describes their loneliness, which has caused them to reach out to strangers for comfort. The idea behind this could be that when people feel stuck or lost, they may look for solace from those outside of their usual circle of acquaintances. However, the singer still cannot find what they’re looking for, despite their efforts to connect with others.
The chorus, “Hold back the years, hold all your fears, you can’t go back,” serves as a warning against trying to return to the past or seeking refuge in old methods that no longer work. The lines “Nowhere to run, I don’t want to hide, the comfort of strangers cannot be denied” seem to suggest that the singer has come to appreciate the support they have found in others, even those they do not know.
Overall, the lyrics to Can’t Go Back describe a deep sense of despair and confusion, but also hint at the redemption that can come from reaching out to others.
