My experience with retinoid purging is that the purge itself responds favorably to the retinoid increasingly. The only time I purged for a long time was when I started tret for the first time. After that, purges from bumping up the strength or restarting after not using for a while were minimal.
I found that using a 2.5 percent BPO wash while purging helped a great deal. I also learned that tazorac in particular required me to moisturize more. The moisturizing eased the purge. If I moisturize well during the day, my skin can handle the full strength unbuffered at night. That made the purging go by quicker.
I know buffering is recommended and beneficial, but I found that buffering just delayed the inevitable purge when I started tapering off the buffer. So the next time around, I just decided to suffer through the purge and not buffer. I just use super gentle cleansers and lots of moisturizer during the day. The purge was vicious but mercifully quick.
The hardest lesson to learn was the one at the end of the video: stop the other actives. A stripped-down routine made things more tolerable and prevented me from purging from something else I might be doing to aggravate the retinoid purge.
This is a wonderful video. It will definitely help people who would have otherwise given up. It is very difficult to push through a process that is causing your skin to get worse before it gets better. Trying to start a retinoid is like trying to quit smoking: it takes numerous tries sometimes.

Thank you for your video. I'm actually going thru a purge and it may be
bc of my new brand of copper peptide. So I cleansed my face and used a light layer of moisturizer to try to calm it down. It could be of the frequent use of it and will take your suggestion to use it 2x a week. I do my skincare 2x a day everyday consistently of copper peptide, retinol serum and Glycolic acid, alternating days and night. I recently changed a brand of peptide to copper peptide. Either way, I'm slowing down the use of my products. Thank you so much for your devoted time with us.

If I'm not wrong, copper peptide is not advisable to be used with retinol. The normal peptide without copper is much preferred and encouraged. You can alternate the copper peptide with your retinol, or use it in the day. Copper peptide cannot be used with pure Vit C too but Vit C derivatives are OK…

I'm using TO retinol for a month now.. and I still have bumps appearing on my face and acne mostly near the area where I have most acne of (cheeks and chin). I put azelaic acid as spot treatment in the morning for inflamed acne. Hearing purging can last up to 3 months calmed me a bit. I thought I'm doing something wrong...

I’ve gone on and off tret and Taz a few times over the past 18 years. The purging has never lasted 3 mos. Even with tazorac, which is the strongest one available. I think if you are purging for that long, you should consider adding BPO spot treatments. Azelaic acid takes a while to work. Retinol is not that strong. It should not be causing this much purging. BPO can tackle the p. Acnes, and calm things down.
Another thing that really helps: moisturizer. It’s a must. But if you are purging like this with retinol, you should just bump up to a prescription retinoid and double treat with BPO. You may as well get more out of it.

@Boom Boom thank you. Hope you found my comment sooner tho hahah but I eventually went to see a dermatologist. Gave me a tret .5% and clindamycin. I'm pimple free now, just the scars.

Well don't just stop and give up. Go see your dermotologist. They might recommend a formula that delivers the active in a way that's less irritating (i.e Retin A-Micro vs the standard Tret cream).

All the ingredients are for soothing and calming… so shouldn't be a problem…not sure what's your skin type but I think you should still use a moisturizer…

Thank you so much for sharing all these informations. Everyone says you should use this, your skin will be perfect after using this but noone says it will be bad before it gets better. @adeln99 one month, now my skin is soooooo much better without any of these things. Not putting any chemical on my skin has made it much better. I think my skin just can't tolerate these products coz I tried them for quite some time by adding them one by one patiently but it only made my skin worse. What really helps my skin is eating good fresh food and sleeping well. Occassionally I put stuff like ice , cold milk and saffron on my face and it's actually doing so well.
Not everyone's skin can tolerate these products. For me, my skin was looking so bad and oily and dotted with tiny bumps.

For me , i always hydrate more if purgin happened. Use gentle mosturiser/ thin layer of ceramide cream. And pls dont use any active ingredient (example ; any acid /niacinamide/vit c/retinol) because it might irritate ur skin more

If you have purged even before using the moisturiser then you should just continue using it but if you keep on breaking out at the place you have never had acnes before maybe you should just stop and use other moisturiser that suits you. 1:03 I notice that right after I apply retinol 0.2% my chin/jaw area itches for a short period. No itchiness for the rest of the day. True enough, I'm now having small bumps on the jaw area. Some inflamed and turned to big pustules, but not painful. I'm not sure if this is purging bc I don't usually have pimples along my jaw. 😥

@Hadzera Duharkic Hello, I stopped using retinol 0.2% (from The Ordinary) because I switched to differin. I think the last time I applied TO retinol was 2 months ago, and I always had some itching. Sometimes on my chin/jaw, sometimes on my cheeks, etc. I'm not sure about azelaic acid though. I haven't tried that yet... Do you apply retinol and azelaic at the same time?

@shizu I apply the azelaic acid in the morning and adapalene in the evening. I used to use clindamycin but the only one available here contains alcohol and I'm allergic to it 😭 After I stopped using it and switched to this I started having more acne that I hope is purging. It's been about 10 days.

@Hadzera Duharkic Oh, I see... I'm sorry I'm not really familiar with azelaic acid and if it can be used with retinol 😞

You can either try to: reduce the frequency of applying them (like 2x a week instead of everyday), or use 1 of them first then slowly re-introduce the other product

If your acne doesn't improve in let's say 1 or 2 weeks, you can make the above modifications or go back to a previous skincare routine that worked for you

(I'm not an aesthetician or dermatologist, I'm just sharing what I learned from other reviews and dermas 😅)

After I used AHA face cleanser then I put Retinol for around 1week on my evening face care, the next day after I washed my face I felt burning and few hour rashes and red on my cheeks, I guess I have my skin purging and looking how to reduced irritation its been 2 weeks, my Doctor said it is Eczema prescribed me with Hydroval and it did not do good it got more bumps. I listened to your technique in skin purging and follow what you teached about sandwich and clay mask and now my skin looks a little bit healed.. i was purging with vit c too i didn't stop using it cuz that way, your skin won't adapt well to the active and if you stop using, you may purge again. however, i got little pimples on the T zone but around the 3 weeks, pimples got reduce and haven't gotten any worse nor gotten a breakout.

Update : so I stopped used them once and WOW ! all the acne that I have from purging disappeared. Now I use one product per day and my skin looks so good. Thanks again Dr.

@Victoria Le maybe you're purging ? use it everyday like this and if in one or two week it gets worse, stop it.
if you start seeing that you have less acnes, you must try to use your toner once every two or three days. hope it help.

Does wardah lightening skincare has all of the acids? Not sure why but I started to get purging after I changed my skincare to Wardah. Now I'm using cosryx cleanser, simple soothing toner, aloe vera/wardah day gel and wardah night cream/Garnier sleeping mask. Although I'm still scare to continue with wardah product. But the night cream feels so good

Adapalene can cause purging. The main difference is if the acne is small or large. Small acne might be purging. Large is generally breakouts.

Honestly, i don't really get it. Why purging? To me, when i tried a skincare product at night and at morning those tiny bumps appeared, i just stop using that product. It's not worth it. Wasting my time, money, and patience.
Skincare products are supposedly taking care your skin at first use not making your skin purging and adding extra efforts, budget, and time consuming in your daily life.
Purging is a problem so why bother.

I believe I heard that salicylic acid cancels out the affects of adaplene. Benzoyl peroxide doesn't, so if you want to pair an acne wash at night, use a Benzoyl peroxide one.

Try the number 5. Don't use any actives when you use differin. Focus on moisturzing and strengthen skin barrier.

@Muhammad Zikri people rarely use it correctly. I would not use Vaseline. There are far too many other products that do a better job of keeping moisture in and which do not occlude like Vaseline does. There are many ways you can cause your skin to breakout from using Vaseline. It is not pore-clogging, but it’s use leads to clogged pores.
Furthermore, the proper removal of Vaseline requires cleansers that may themselves irritate your skin. It’s just not necessary to use it. Use a non-comedegenic moisturizer that will allow your skin to breathe and has moisturizing and barrier repair ingredients.

Im using 0.1% adapalene right now because i have cystic acne one or two sometimes and now i have new cystic acne everyday so i lessen to use it alternate days 😭

@NSRAIZA i started last year dec 😭 it got worsen this January and until now i still got new cystic acne everyday 2 - 3 at the same time. My plan is to finish this tube and stop haha. Im nearly done so 🥺

Hi there.. just wanna share if u dont mind. I used Alpha Arbutin+HA by The Ordinary and i found that it gets sticky when i rub the serum. Rupanya kena dab sahaja with your fingers, jgn sapu. Kalau dab dab dia akan cepat meresap & kering, tak melekit. Kalau serum kat muka dari jernih jadi berbuih putih it means u put too much. 2 or 3 drops are sufficient. Same goes for the niacinamide serum ☺️
