I have a copy of the DVD that I have watched a thousand times. That is my son at the very end in the pictures and the dedication is to him, Brian Hauge. He passed shortly after finishing this. I will be forever grateful for this dedication. He had so much admiration for Dave and all involved with this production. It was unexpected and I miss him every day. He was a wonderful young man.

With the passing of Taylor this wonderful documentary seems even more precious. Some of the incredible talent that is filmed on here, we will not ever see or hear from again except for what has been preserved for us to enjoy. It is a treasure for those of us that came from the age when the greatest music ever, was made. Brian thought Dave, Taylor, all the Foo Fighters and those he was privileged enough to work with were and are amazing; this was one of the greatest times of his short life. RIP, all of the greats captured here, for us enjoy & love for the rest of our lives.

I didn't know him , but it's awesome to hear some positive love I'm times of sadness. I listen to mogwai helicon 1- &EVERYCOUNTRYS SON And it moved my soul to tears missing my loved onesand friends whom are departed. But it's not all sadness. It means that they were so special that they touched other humans so profoundly.

Nice to see that this is finally on youtube so more people can enjoy it! I worked at Sound City when I was in high school back in 71 and 72 which I consider an honor and it was an experience I'll never forget . went back a few years later and help put in that Neve console. I destroyed my eyesight soldering XLR connectors but it was worth it

@jane doe Not a fan of Nirvana or Foo Fighters, but I will say that Dave Grohl seems to be more authentic than most including a lot of his malcontent contemporaries. Someone mentioned Buzz Osborne, one of the most insufferable people in music. At least he tries to be an ambassador for music in an age where music is disposable including a lot of the "underground" bands that once were our only hope.

@Sean Dana I’ve been working on my own stuff for about ten years. I think the guys I was playing with could have done something with their music but they just want a hobby band. Worked with the bass player for a while, putting together all of your own gear takes time. I am actually pretty close now. Two overhead tape deck mics, a broken sennheiser for snare, crappy bass mic for kick, I get a sound I’m happy with. The rest is playing skill. And I don’t think much of Grohl just for having a hit record, that’s a publishers term. The guy was in the right place at the right time, if he hadn’t of had kurt’s writing he’d be a nobody, just another had been in another generic noise rock band from the 90s. I don’t think his solo stuff is anything but standard industry gunk, pretty achievable after being in one of the most significant rock bands of the 90s, if not the entire last quarter of the 20th century.

There are plenty great talented people alive still that are under the media radar. Today's musicians need much more stages, and better media. In the 60s, 70's, 80's, even the '90s, it was much easier to book your band, and fill the place up. Nowadays kids just stay home. Playing computer games, watching Netflix, prime, etc. The chance to either get into a violent fight, or be hassled by cops, is just too big. Different playing field. Unfortunately. I would have loved to live in the 60's/70s.

By far the best "Rockumentary" I've seen...Dave is so cool to have given new life to the Nuve board...never knew the history of Sound City and the awesome people behind the scenes...I could have watched 2 more hrs easily...I knew of the studio and some of the bands who recorded there, but didn't know what a monumental place it has in recording history...Thanks Dave and to all those involved in making this amazing film !

I went to Woodstock many years ago with my high school sweetheart. He was a lead guitar player. I was really to young and it rained alot causing much mud.We did marry and his rock star career was our life.We lasted though many bands somehow attained a brand new home on long Island New York.Then I suggested female lead singer. It was the age of Pat Benetar, Blonde Stevie Nick's etc.Well bad karma took over and my husband and the singer fell in love. That was the end chapter in my rock and roll life , it was the early 80"s .I had always a bartender and waitresses to keep fast cash in our lives. Once he left me restaurant had a disco in one half.So starts a new music phase in my life.After serving dinner I would change my clothes into the disco look short leather skirts, spandex, spike heels etc. I became a part time DJ.My. heart was still broken but I had a great figure and a people personality.I discovered Nirvana
after a bad car accident. I now wasin the grunge eara. I was very impressed with this three pipece band.

glad to inform you, incase you still dont know, but tape has made a resurgence and is growing and only accelerating. Recording the Masters even produces a brand new production recording tape. but yeah thanks to the likes of mac demarco, tame impala, and others like them, using 4 track cassette recorders and reel to reel multitrackers, machines like these are extremely high in demand now. every home studio worth their stripes recording real instruments either has a 4 track or reel to reel multitracker at least for their drums.

This documentary is just mind blowing. I moved to the San Fernando Valley in 1977 and this documentary makes me feel homesick in a way. All of this going on right in my backyard. How cool is that.

I will say this:
These guys are extremely fortunate. Beethoven first heard his 3rd Symphony the morning it premiered. He had to pay to have the score printed, he had to beg and scrounge to get musicians together for an evening performance that he had to sell tickets for. They rehearsed for only a few hours. It was performed and undoubtedly many mistakes were made. He probably only heard it performed 2 or 3 more times in his lifetime. As for me…I have been able to listen to near perfect recorded performances dozens of times.
We are all so fortunate to live in a day and age of technology that offers superb recording and replication technology in the service of art.
Beautiful film with a big heart. Beautiful ode to person-to-person, “everyone in the room together” artistic collaboration. Highlights some of the best attributes and capabilities of contemporary life and technology.

I loved Joe, I loved Tom, I still love Paula, everyone...my time at Sound City was amazing. It went by like a blink of the eye. Camped out next to Ronnie Dio in the rehearsal studios...first time in studio B, Joe Walsh walks in and just watches for a while. We parked our International Harvester truck on the roof, it got trashed within a month from vandals in the night...so many stories. This was pre-Nirvana...

You don't have to be young to be excited about life. I'm 71 and every day is full of colors and feelings and experiences. I am truly amazed at how far science has come in our day. I was born about a year after Leo Fender and Les Paul/Gibson started making guitars so I've been playing guitar most of my life. Music is like an old friend who never let me down. I can start playing music and go on a mind journey that takes me to some wild places. If you concentrate on the music, the actual notes and sounds, and nothing else you can easily go on a journey, too. It's like meditation but crazier. Works best by candlelight with headphones. I can only imagine the kind of vibes that are hanging around Sound City. Incidentally, "Surf City," was a big hit when they Sound City opened and "__ City" was a popular phrase attached to all kinds of things.

I had no idea the rich history behind sound city. Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, and Fleetwood Mac have always been my favorites since I was born in 1979. I feel like I'm peeking into their secrets that I'm not supposed to see. Very captivating and emotional. I love this.

I like this Documentary because he and the band go to various cities and show the history of those cities and their various music scenes and sounds. Every city has its own style and history. NY is different than New Orleans. Chicago is different than Austin.

I love when they are working with Paul McCartney in the recording studio. Paul says to Butch the recording engineer "we'll just try it and you tell us what's wrong with it." and you hear a voice off camera in the control booth say to Butch with an almost nervous laugh "Yeah Butch, tell Paul McCartney what to do." It's a great moment!

From the great artists and the superb Neve console this place is a piece of life and musical history for everyone who has listened and liked any of the music that was made there. Quite the documentary - 2012. Some of these folks are no longer with us; glad they got them on film. I was in radio for many years; I'm amazed at the number of tracks I played came out of Sound City. Definitely a special place at a special time - and then another one!

Was watching Beato talking about the way music is made now, like by committee, then came back & watched this again. That time frame, 15 years or so, from the studio-only Beatles LPs all the way thru the 70s how much know-how, engineering, recording, playing is represented in all the great analog recordings that are such a treasure now

Being 12 in 1979 I had a good ear for drum sound, which I loved the opening of "Hear comes my girl". It sounded awesome through my dad's Wharfdale 90 speakers. Pretty much all the music I listened to came out of this studio. Wow, what a impact that place had on our lives.

Agree. I was 13 in 1979 and all those fantastic albums we enjoyed growing up that spawned from this one studio. Just amazing. And yes, those unmistakable beats from Damn the Torpedoes. Holy crap I loved them. Refugee, Here comes my girl. Don't do me like that. The punch and crispness that came from those drums, combined with the nostalgic Hammond organ, the clarity and jams that came from those guitars, and that voice... Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers put out an album that made everyone stop and listen and go "wow!" And Fleetwood Mac... OMG. This documentary explains so much. The reason why all those drums sounded so good.. the sound board... the room... the forced live performances... all of it. I never realized so much of this music was actually done live. I just assumed that after the Beatles, most modern music was all recorded in layers, track by track, so that accidental screw ups, sound bleed, and needing to get a perfect "take" from each band member separately was the norm. But clearly that was not the case. Also, over the years, I'd probably given too much credit to the producers and sound engineers for a given band's sound and great albums, after hearing stories about them so much and classic albums like Back In Black, Pyromania, and even the legend of Sir George Martin. But clearly this documentary rips a lot of that to shreds, and gives back much of the credit to the performers and the special acoustics and equipment of the studio itself.

One thing I thought was sad was seeing how this studio and its employees struggled financially over the years, despite the unimaginable success of the records that came out of these studios. It's generally common knowledge that many very famous bands and solo artists had struggled financially, despite their platinum success over a career. Much of that due to the terrible contracts they signed, and the outrageous greed of the record companies. But it was a surprise to me to hear that even the recording studios often struggled to make payroll for long periods of time. One may have easily thought these studio owners would be driving around in Lambos and living high in the Hollywood Hills in mansions, given all the money they charge to rent out their studios.

Major props to Dave Grohl. He is one of my music heros, 20% for his music, but 80% for being such an amazing person. He's a real class act and has really given so much back to an industry that helped him be who is is today.

The Buckingham Nicks album was a staff favorite at the record store where I worked in the late 1970s. Ditto their first album with Fleetwood Mac. I didn't know the story of how Mick Fleetwood first connected with them, though. Or that Nevermind was recorded in the same studio. My cousins lived in Van Nuys but I had no idea about Sound City until now. Thanks to Dave Grohl!

Loved the incredible stories of the lows and incredible highs of how Sound City shaped and influenced music and gave precious time and attention to struggling bands. But the extra heart-rending stories of Rick Springfields pit bull terrier and all of the hilarious pics just made me laugh out loud and cry tears of joy imagining him performing all of those dog-funny acts. As a dog-lover, they had me at “pit bull”.

You can't hold Dave accountable, or blame him for the changes to the music industry, such as ProTools, CDs becoming obsolete, or Sound City's previous owners making poor business decisions. Without that Neve 8028, absolutely none of those brilliant and magical records would have been released. It is NOT just another piece of equipment. It is a piece of rock history, and he wanted to preserve that, and not allow it to be lost forever. I would have done the same (in his shoes).

I hope some others got the experience I did at 46:14! I'm watching this on my laptop with pretty high quality headphones. For the first 45 minutes EVERY note that came through my phones was recorded on the Neve. Then at 46 minutes the Whitesnake song - recorded NOT on the Neve, but on the newer equipment at Keith Olsen's place - started, kicking in at 46:14, and I swear to God the difference was shocking! I started recording on 2" tape in the early '80s, and I've experienced the entire birth and maturing of digital. NEVER have I heard such an obvious difference like that. My ears being conditioned for 45 minutes by the purity, clarity, and integrity of that Neve-analog tape combination, then being hit with the bland, compressed, lifeless sound of digital only seconds later....that was really, really fascinating! [to be fair, digital was in its infancy; it is much better now..]

Dave is one of the few genuine rock stars left. Any video production he's been a part of has been interesting and well made. As the front man for FF, he's unmatched in live shows. I learned so much about Sound City, other than seeing their name in the credits of some of my favorite albums back in the day. Thanks Dave!

Cross-talk between circuits and between busses was absolutely paramount. The way that transformer behaves with DC flowing in it can vary according to the material of the core, and the gaping of the core. I had watched most of this before Christmas time. And came back now January 1 to watch the last half hour. And I just loved this movie. And I was listening to buried treasure last night. And Tom Petty was playing one of his songs of course that have been recorded at sound city. And you take on a whole new appreciation for the balls to the wall sound and music. So to everyone be safe. Dave Grohl and this documentary are the reason I got into rock music. It wasn't listening to my favorite band, Minus the Bear, for years prior to it; it wasn't even after buying my first guitar. It was this fucking documentary. It opened me up to so much beautiful music, and I'll always love Dave for that. (Also, is there not a better ambassador for rock music than Dave Grohl?)

I'm so glad to have stumbled onto this film. My love for music blossomed in CA about 2011. It was like I hadn't heard real music previously since there is So Much live music that I heard from LA to Grass Valley to Sacramento to Lodi. It was a fantastic experience!

Ii was never a recording artist there, but I could hear and feel the greatness from those sessions! Beautiful, sweet analog...I learned to play bass on my dad's 1960 jazz bass...same thing...I'm so happy that monster console ended up at Dave's place! What an experience to play with heroes and greats!
I live in South Texas and through the 70's my cousin and I would spend weekends up in his room on the 3rd floor listening to all this great rocknroll coming in from WLS in Chicago. I tried to learn every song on dad's old jazz bass...good times...
