Take a Heart
The Sorrows Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

First you take a heart, then you break her heart
But before you do, you make it fall for you
Then you give it back, ahh you shouldn't do that

Seen you walk that floor just a-thinking of you
You seen me walk that floor baby, right out of my school
Somebody help me please, tell me what to do
Just send an S.O.S., my heart's in distress
Won't somebody please take her place
Well I found her there, searching everywhere

Break

Watch you breaking my heart baby

First you take a heart, then you break her heart
But before you do, you make it fall for you
Then you give it back, ahh you shouldn't do that

Seen you walk that floor just a-thinking of you
You seen me walk that floor baby, right out of my school
Somebody help me please, tell me what to do

Send me an S.O.S., my heart's in distress
Won't somebody please take her place
Well I found her there, searching everywhere

Oh you shouldn't do that (oh you shouldn't do that)
Oh you shouldn't do that (oh you shouldn't do that)
Oh you shouldn't do that baby (oh you shouldn't do that)
Oh you shouldn't do that

You know you broke my heart, you made me fall for you

You know you shouldn't do that
You know you shouldn't do that

Overall Meaning

The Sorrows's song "Take A Heart" is a warning to lovers not to play with people's emotions. The lyrics speak of a situation where someone takes another person's heart by making them fall in love, only to then break that love in a callous way. The plea for "somebody help me please, tell me what to do" indicates the deep hurt and confusion that the one who has been left behind is feeling. The repeated refrain of "you shouldn't do that" is a reminder that causing someone pain in this way is not acceptable.

The song is a straightforward rock band composition, with a driving drumbeat, guitar riffs, and a catchy chorus. The energy of the music matches the intensity of the emotions being expressed in the lyrics. The insistent repetitions of the chorus and the urgent, almost desperate tone of the verses make the song a classic of the genre.

1966 - We, the Loupha Band in Brazil began to play "Take a Heart". Astonished! People got lost in the sound - big drum, big bass, big guitar and lots of shout. Lovely!
