The background of this scene with Allison taking John's knife is hysterical. It's probably one of the best subtle jokes in all of Hughes' movie. He's taking a serious scene and adding an ever so slight ounce of humor to it.

If you noticed the look on Claire's face, it's great acting because she knows that Bender was telling the truth, but he was going too far. That's why Andrew came in. He wasn't trying to impress Claire. He just noticed that Bender was getting into her head and pushing her too far, so he wanted Bender to back off. The sad truth is that there are real people just like Bender who will try to push your buttons by telling the truth about your life just by the way you act

@Seth Winters I'd say he went too far with the sexual aspect in this scene, getting a little too graphic with the details. But he does call her out on using her sexuality to manipulate others. I would find it odd to point only to him when the whole movie is about all of them calling each other out. He gets called out too...

If they weren't "messing with someone's feelings", this movie would've just been a bunch of kids sitting there and never getting to understand each other.

This scene has always confused me, because of the way Bender is being portrayed, the emotion in his voice suggests that he's not going to or at least doesn't want to stab him, I mean I know he's come from a bad background and he probably couldn't give two shits about what happens to Andrew, but I think he's just waving the knife around to appear tough, rather than actually planning on using it

There's something almost animalistic about that, that Bender's home environment is so bad that he doesn't feel safe at the first sign of trouble. The only people Bender probably feels safe around is teachers, which is all the more reason why he looked genuinely scared when Mr Dicc flipped and pressure him to fight

They all shed clothes over the course of the day. Bender comes in wearing an overcoat, goes down to a denim jacket, and then the shirts. Claire started with a leather jacket and went to a pink blouse. Brian came in wearing a coat, wore a sweatshirt most of the day, and then after gaining his confidence from writing the letter to Vernon, he’s wearing a t-shirt (and leading the way out). Allison came in with a heavy coat, went down to a black turtleneck, and of course the makeover—wearing a white slip, her hair out of her face, and less makeup. She also comes out wearing Andy’s hoodie.

In a fair fight, Andy would win. But in a nasty street fight, Bender would use a weapon or really brutal tactics to win. That's why they silently agree to not escalate things. Andy doesn't know how far Bender will go, and Bender is concerned that he can't control himself. Great scene.

I have to laugh, people saying that Bender won;

He was desperate, when Andy immobilized him, only to notice his initial reaction trying to get out and failing, after he was released, tried to remain calm and play tough, showing the knife.

The fact is, Bender knows how to use the psychological game, but it is not guaranteed in the beating itself, he knows how to use psychology and the bullshit to intimidate, but he does not know how to fight.

Andy on the other hand is a fighter and proved that he could dominate Bender, but he was afraid when he saw the knife, as anyone would be, after all if Bender tried to attack him, it would be something that would put his life at risk.

Judd Nelson's acting in this movie was outstanding. He far surpassed Emilio Estevez and all the other actors in the level of performance he gave. Hard to believe he didn't ultimately achieve the kind of success that he clearly was capable of. Talent is just one small part of the equation apparently.

I find it curious that Andrew and John fought to defend Claire the entire movie. When Andrew made fun of Claire feeling sorry for herself, Bender defended her by asking the jock if his family life was nice. And in this scene where El walked in on Claire, Andrew was willing to take a stab as long as he left Claire alone. Although Andrew was insufferable with John (and vice versa) I want to highlight the fact that he really respects women

I was a high school junior in 1985 when this came out, and I've always thought the same thing about Bender: EMO. Projects toughness but is incapable of standing up for himself. Contrast him and Cameron from "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," who actually had the nads to wreck his dad's collectible Ferrari to get his father's attention. Bender just feels sorry for himself and tries to invite sympathy. Bender likely became a successful, lifelong politician.

Yes, they were huge successful movies for teens...and you would rent the VHS of them for sleepovers....pretty much all John Hughes movies, The Outsiders, Top Gun, Dirty Dancing, etc. I don’t know if we thought they would stand the test of time, but it’s good to know younger generations like them.

Anne, I was in elementary school at the time. From what I could tell, they did seem like instant classics. Kids were going around quoting The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller; and Ben Stein's "Anyone...? Anyone...? Bueller...? Bueller...?" became a recognized motif while the movie was still in theaters. And Breakfast Club & the others you mentioned were all considered, by default, essential viewing. I was too young to be reading film reviews at the time, so I can't say whether folks were already talking about how they encapsulated the era while that era was still going on. But I definitely got the sense that the general public considered them important and/or thought of them as filling a crucial, broad-appeal niche (the same niche that Rebel Without a Cause had occupied thirty years earlier, I suspect).

(I'm more jaded about them now than I was back then, BTW.)

In Ferris Bueller, if I remember correctly, Cameron's dad was neglectful and domineering, but not physically abusive. Bender's dad threatens and beats his family. Both are bad, but the differences are important when we're talking about how children develop/rebel.

I don't think anybody would want to take on Bender when he was in that kind of mood (when he was screaming and threw the library books of the desk and scaled the steps). He seemed dangerous and out of control, even for a wrestler like Andy.

Bender always played like he would stab or even kill Andrew, but the reality is he would have been choked out before he could pull the knife. But also there is the point were Bender wouldn't get to that point, he was playing tough, but he wasn't going to hurt Andrew.

Pulling out a switch blade doesn't make you a better fighter. Andrew was cocky because he knew he could beat bender, once the blade was pulled out he was frightened. If I was fighting someone and he pulled out a knife, then I would back off as well.
