Coincidentally, both movies came out the same year(1964)and of course take place in the same town(London, England)and even in the same general era, in fact(1910 or nineteen-teens, about 100 years ago now.)

At one point my dad had to work on this musical.
So I memorized most of it.

A shame that Audrey wasn't allowed to sing - her singing voice was dubbed in by Marni Nixon. Hepburn's voice wasn't as good of course, but was still quite nice, and speaking of Audrey Hepburn, a consummate and accomplished actress, my God - what a beautiful woman to boot.

The shame is that the pea-brained producers did not trust the relatively unknown Julie Andrews to draw the crowds needed for the movie’s success.

Julie was Rex Harrison’s partner in the very successful Broadway of the same name. Too bad we will never see how the original Eliza looked like.

Actually she did sing. There is even 2 surviving recordings of her vocals which are pretty good on the 50th Anniversary Editions. The problem was she was dubbed by Marni Nixon without Warner Bros ever informing her first. She only found out because Marni accidentally leaked the information. I for the life of me cannot begin to fathom why when vocals were perfectly fine in Funny Face, Charade and of course when she sang Moonriver in Breakfast at Tiffany's. That is why there have been rumors for a while that Audrey was extremely upset at with Studio Executives and may have possibly said some nasty things to them only to apologise the next day because it's Audrey.

The song itself is a song of triumph done as a Spanish Tango so that it could be danced to. This show is currently being revived at Lincoln Center. It is based on George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion.. Brilliant in every way.
The late Rex Harrison, so the story goes, wasn't a trained singer, so he employed a technique known as 'sprechstimme' or speaking to music rather than singing in the style associated with traditional Broadway musicals.

In the Spanish version of the movie the verse was "La lluvia en Sevilla es una pura maravilla", something like "The rain in Seville is absolutely wonderful". I live in Seville (South of Spain), where the total amount of yearly precipitation is about 500 mm. Not so much. Seville is located in a valley at sea level. In general, in Spain the rain stays mainly in the northern mountains, where up to 2500-3000 mm of precipitation per year can be measured.
