Save Yourself
The Speedway Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Wake up, wake up.. take a breath.
Sit up, sit up.. you look a mess.
You didn't take what it says on the bottle—if you did you would be sane,
so wake up, wake up you've done it again.

You've got to save yourself—it's up to you and no one else.
You've got to save yourself.
I'm watching, I'm waiting,
but nobody's changing the truth.
You've got to save yourself.

You lie, you lie silently;
‘feel bad, so bad constantly.
I don't think you know what you're doing—if you did I wouldn't be here.
So stand up, stand up dry your tears.

You seem to think there's nobody like you;
day after day don't know what you might do.
‘Can't understand what it really feels like;
something so small is killing you inside.

Overall Meaning

The song Save Yourself by The Speedway is a powerful message about taking responsibility for your own well-being. The opening lines, "Wake up, wake up.. take a breath. Sit up, sit up.. you look a mess" indicate a sense of urgency and a need to take action. It is clear that the person being addressed has made some poor choices, specifically not following the instructions on a bottle which could have led to a better outcome. However, the lyrics also suggest that this is not an isolated occurrence, as they have "done it again".

The chorus of the song provides the powerful message that "You've got to save yourself—it's up to you and no one else", indicating that the only person who can truly change the situation is the one experiencing it. The second verse suggests that the person has been putting on a facade, lying silently and feeling bad constantly. The singer of the song indicates that they are waiting and watching, but that "nobody's changing the truth." The lyrics end with an emotive plea to "stand up, stand up, dry your tears", and a recognition that "something so small is killing you inside."

Overall, the song Save Yourself by The Speedway is a poignant message about the importance of taking ownership of your own life and choices. It is a reminder that sometimes the smallest things can have a big impact, and that taking action to save yourself is often the most powerful choice you can make.

Great stuff. Saw them live in Sheffield in 2004 when they supported Bryan Adams and they were fantastic.....so good that some people (very wrongly !) assumed they were miming. I bought the album and played it to death. Just dug it out to play again. It was a shame when they split up. The Save Yourself album is brilliant. Jill Jackson has since gone on to perform some very good solo material herself though.
