Hang On To Yourself
The Spiders from Mars Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well she's a tongue twisting storm, she will come to the show tonight
Praying to the light machine
She wants my honey not my money she's a funky-thigh collector
Layin' on 'lectric dreams

So come on, come on, we've really got a good thing going
Well come on, well come on, if you think we're gonna make it
You better hang on to yourself

We can't dance, we don't talk much, we just ball and play
But then we move like tigers on vaseline
Well the bitter comes out better on a stolen guitar
You're the blessed, we're the spiders from Mars

So come on, come on, we've really got a good thing going
Well come on, well come on, if you think we're gonna make it
You better hang on to yourself

So come on, come on, we've really got a good thing going
Well come on, well come on, if you think we're gonna make it
You better hang on to yourself

So come on, come on, we've really got a good thing going
Well come on, well come on, if you think we're gonna make it
You better hang on to yourself

Come on, ah, come on, ah (repeat ad inf.)

Overall Meaning

The Spiders from Mars's song Hang On To Yourself is a powerful rock anthem that features intense vocals and electrifying guitar riffs. The lyrics describe an alluring woman who is a "tongue-twisting storm" and a "funky-thigh collector" who wants the singer's "honey not [his] money." The singer seems to be caught up in the excitement of the moment and invites the listener to join in on the fun, warning them to "hang on to yourself" because things are about to get wild.

The second verse continues with descriptions of the band's reckless lifestyle, stating "we can't dance, we don't talk much, we just ball and play." But despite their carefree attitude, they move "like tigers on vaseline," implying a sense of grace and agility amidst the chaos. They are "the spiders from Mars," otherworldly creatures who have come to bring their brand of rock and roll to the masses.

Overall, the song urges the listener to let go of their inhibitions and join in the wild ride that is rock and roll, to hold on to themselves but not be afraid to lose control.

I was at Oxford New Theatre on June 26th (second show) - about a week before this show. 13 years old, my first ever concert. Imagine the impact of seeing and hearing this live....I'll never forget it. Thank god this has been captured on film and restored to this level of quality. Spine tingling.
