Waterline
The Spoons Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There is a corner in her heart
Where everything always shows up in the end
Sometimes good, sometimes bad
The memories just rise up to the top

On the waterline
In her hurricane mind
And the submarines keep surfacing
To the waterline

Men can see it in her eyes
Something drown in there long, long ago
Under the big waves out at sea
When it comes I really want to be there

On the waterline
In her hurricane mind
And the submarines keep surfacing...
On the waterline
At the edge of love
I swim to you
On the waterline

And every day I build the boat
To get to where she swims alone
On falling waves I cannot reach
So everyday I wait
And the submarines keep surfacing...

There is a corner in her heart
Where everything always shows up in the end
Sometimes good, sometimes bad

On the waterline
In her hurricane mind
And the submarines keep surfacing...
On the waterline
At the edge of love
I swim to you
On the waterline
Deep in your heart
I swim to you
On the waterline
At the edge of love
I swim to you

On the waterline
At the edge of love

Overall Meaning

The Spoons's song "Waterline" is a song about a woman who is haunted by memories that always seem to resurface. The lyrics describe how these memories rise up to the surface like submarines surfacing to waterline. The song paints an intense picture of a woman whose life has been marked by good and bad experiences that continue to affect her. The singer of the song is a woman who has experienced deep emotional pain and trauma that never really goes away.

The chorus repeats a phrase about the waterline, implying that this is where the woman is most vulnerable. The waterline is also where the submarines keep surfacing, representing the emotions that keep bubbling up to the surface. The statement, “At the edge of love, I swim to you, on the waterline,” implies that this woman is loved and wants to be rescued, but she’s also struggling with her past, which has affected her deeply.

Overall, "Waterline" is a song about emotional turmoil and the desperation to reach out for help despite the difficulty of doing so. It's a powerful reminder that we don't always know everything that's going on in someone's life, and sometimes the ones who need help the most are the ones who won't ask for it.

The greatest tragedy is Canadian bands never get the international or domestic recognition they deserve.
Spoons forever!

I remember the 1st time i heard this, it was on CFNY (the best radio station in the day) in the early 90's. I was a teenager & it really did something to me. I'm now 47 & it still gives me the same feeling. What a great song by a great band!

@joevolpini4038

What a touching song!

@silverage682

It's a shame that a HQ version of this video is not available. Perhaps the most underrated Canadian band of all time, and one of the greatest Canadian singles of all time. If it is not restored I fear that eventually this song / video will be lost forever...that would be a damn shame.

@Novaboing

Another Canadian Classic that everyone missed... This song is a absokute gem. Listen to Rudy - Miss you.

@davidlee5329

Probably one of the best Canadian songs ever written! I was 16 and playing waterpolo...we played this constantly...

@Winnipegger

In the 80's Canadian bands ruled! So many great artists!

@pbarc552

Great song and video by the best Canadian band ever! Love the juxtapositioning water, waves and reflections off band members Gord & Sandy... And despite the water off the snare effect having been done before I can't think of a better use of it, here... Man, I've seen the Spoons just a half dozen times and I just can't get enough. When I first saw the Spoons in '82 at the Police Picnic @theCNE they immediately became my favourite band... the Spoons rock dude!
