My Junk
The Spring Awakening Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

[Wendla]
In the midst of this nothing. This miss of a life.
Still there's this one thing just to see you go by.

[Martha]
It's almost like lovin'. Sad as that is.

[Thea]
May not be cool, but it's so where I live.

[Anna]
It's like I'm your lover or more like your ghost.
I spend the day wondering what you do, where you go.

[Thea]
I try and just kick it but then what can I do.
We've all got our junk, and my junk is you.

[All girls]
See us, winter walking after a storm.
It's chill in the wind but it's warm in your arms.
Stumble snow blind, may not be true.
We've all got our junk, and my junk is you.

[Georg]
Well, you'll have to excuse me, I know it's so off.
I love when you do stuff that's rude and so wrong.

[Hanschen]
I go up to my room, turn the stereo on...
Shoot up some you, and the you is some song.

[Anna]
I lie back just driftin' and play out these scenes
I ride on the rush of all the hopes and all the dreams.

[Thea]
I may be neglecting the things I should do.
But we've all got our junk, and my junk is you.

[All]
See we still keep talkin' after you're gone.
You still with me then feels so good in my arms.
They say you go blind, maybe it's true.
We've all got our junk, and my junk is you.

It's like we stop time. What can I do?
We've all got our junk, and my junk is you.
My junk is you.

My junk is you.
You. You. You.

Overall Meaning

The song "My Junk" from the musical Spring Awakening is an emotional number shared by several characters. The lyrics portray a sense of longing and affection towards a particular person, referred to as "junk." The girls in the chorus hint towards a sense of jealousy, admiring the person and their attributes. The song emphasizes the idea that everyone has their own “junk,” whether it be an addiction, a person, or a secret, and that it affects us all. The lyrics come from the perspective of four different female characters, each expressing their love in their unique way. They talk about how they spend their day, wonder about what this “junk” is up to, and how they often neglect other things in their life to think about this person. The song and its lyrics highlight the significant impact that someone can have on a person and their life, sometimes even when that person may not be the best influence.

Overall, “My Junk” is a song that explores the lingering and sometimes dangerous attachment a person can develop towards someone or something. The lyrics touch on the idea of codependency and how it can become easy to lose yourself in someone else. The song is an intimate portrayal of how someone can become so entangled in another's life, that they can control and affect your own decisions, to the point of neglecting the other things in life. The characters use the word “junk'' to describe a person or thing that means everything to them, yet it is often mistaken for something worthless, like a meaningless addiction. The song acts as a reminder that everyone has something that might be their junk, and it is essential to be in control of it before it grows too much.

The character's name is Hanschen, and he's reading a passage from Shakespeare's "Othello". And he doesn't "turn" gay, he just is gay (even in "The Bitch of Living", he says that he has a crush on Bobby Mayler).

I know it is kind of randomly asking but does anybody know of a good site to stream newly released tv shows online ?

@LaqOfInterest

They wanted to give the impression that when the characters suddenly come out of nowhere and start singing a song, they're in their own little world and not literally singing. Throwing in the microphones (and Hanschen's mention of a stereo) is an anachronism meant to remind us of that.

@rachelmarie93

haha i just realized that he was reading the killing scene from othello when he was doing that haha. thats hilarious

@FlameOfGodith

I can't even imagine what practicing that musta been like xD

@xSamDGK

To show that they've kind of stepped out of reality to sing a song. So they aren't singing in reality. When they don't use mics (left behind, word of your body, mamma who bore me) it's because they're still in the scene and interacting with others. The mics don't actually work.

@mmerliss

this isn't consistent with the show. Its actually a flaw in the directing.

@hunter6196
