Vertigo
The Static Age Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Vertigo
as soft as skin
when everything stops and it starts again
please let it go
i can taste her heart against my lips

the signal fades
and we count it down
to the sound of a word that she's never known
vertigo
brittle hearts so tight they crack like glass

she waits for it
it's all that she has

along a wire
across the sky
a room with a view and a soft prayer for light
through the midnight hour
streets that have no names carry me home

and we find ourselves
with the hearts of thieves
she whispers like angels with blood on her teeth
i fall down again
i learn to love to bleed

she waits for it
it's all that she has

and i pray for sleep to fall
that's all that i need

(and here i lay
in soft and still
as shadows crawl
across the room
all while she sleeps
in soft and still
as seconds fade)

vertigo
it starts again
with the darkest of rooms and the softest of skin
please let it go
i'm halfway home by now but in my head

and i somehow fail
to find her lips
as this sick game we play takes a familiar twist

and the beauty is
signals i once loved i left for this

Overall Meaning

These lyrics describe a complex relationship that begins with a feeling of vertigo, a sensation of dizziness and disorientation. The singer is experiencing a moment when everything stops, and then starts again, and he feels the softness of his lover's skin. However, he seems to be searching for something that he can't find or achieve. The signal fades, and they count it down to the sound of a word that she's never known. This sense of vertigo is both physical and emotional. The brittle hearts are tight, and they crack like glass. The woman seems to wait for this feeling of vertigo, which is all that she has.

The song transitions into a scene where the characters find themselves with the hearts of thieves. The singer falls down again, he learns to love to bleed. He prays for sleep to fall because that's all he needs. There is an interesting contrast between the softness and stillness of the room while his lover sleeps and the shadows that crawl across the room. The singer can't find her lips, and the sick game they play takes a familiar twist. It seems the beauty of the signals he once loved, he left for this exciting but dangerous relationship.

Chill your pants, it's music. Don't like it, don't listen to it. I personally just accept all music as whatever it's trying to achieve. Can't go wrong if a songs about yourself and it's supposed to be. Music doesn't have to preach world peace, but when it does it's still not larger than life. Today I've listened to Bring Me the Horizon, Passion Pit, Dead Kennedys, Zombie Nation, and about 100 other bands of varied genres. Get over petty arguments, chill and just enjoy what you enjoy.
