Blue Velvet
The Statues Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She wore blue velvet
Bluer than velvet was the night
Softer than satin was the light
From her eyes

She wore blue velvet
And as the night danced slowly by
Warmer than May her tender sighs
Love was ours

Ours a love we held tightly
Feeling this rapturous glow
Like a flame burning brightly
But when she's gone
Gone was the glow of

Blue velvet
And in my heart there'll always be
Precious and warm, a memory
Through the years

And I still can see blue velvet

Through my tears
(I can still see blue velvet through my tears)

Overall Meaning

The Statues' Blue Velvet is a song that speaks to the memory of a love that was cherished deeply. The song starts by referring to a woman who wore blue velvet, which was bluer than the night and softer than satin. Her eyes also emitted a soft light that was captivating. The woman in blue velvet is someone the singer was deeply in love with; a love that is described as being warmer than May, and which caused the singer to feel an intense glow. This love was so special that it was held tightly by the two. It burned brightly, like a flame.

The chorus talks about the idea that when the woman in blue velvet was gone, the glow of their love, which was so strong before, disappeared. The song's final lines describe how the love that was shared will always be a precious and warm memory in the heart of the singer, and even though they may cry, they can still see blue velvet in their mind's eye. The song is a beautiful story of love that was special, and which still remains cherished in memory.

I was a senior in high school when this came out. If you weren't in love before this song, you would fall in love the minute you heard it with whoever you were dancing with. Great version. My favorite.

Great version of this. Smooth as silk

This song is so good that almost all of the versions of it range from perfection (The Clovers) to excellent (this version) to good (Bobby Vinton). It would be hard for anyone with even a modicum of talent to mess up this classic.
