You & Me
The Steves Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The way you love me
The way you love me makes me forget
All the pain that I've held in my heart
There's no strange that could tear us apart
Because
The way you love me
The way you love me makes me forget
All the pain that I've held in my heart
There's no strange that could tear us apart
No, no, no
I'm not alone
But I'm alone
Does that make sense to you, my love?
I've just spent so long

All by myself
That it's all I really know, my love

Overall Meaning

The repetition of these lyrics showcases the insecurity and desperation of the singer. They are desperately seeking validation from their partner, hoping that they are desired just as much as they desire their partner. The repetition also creates a sense of urgency, as if the singer's whole world is hanging on the answer to this question. The vulnerability in these lines is relatable, as many people have experienced the fear of being rejected or not being wanted by someone they deeply desire.

The simplicity of these lines is also powerful. The Steves have managed to express a complex emotion with only four lines, proving that sometimes less is more. This simplicity is mirrored in the pared-down instrumentation of the song, which consists mainly of acoustic guitar and vocals. The rawness of the vocals also reflects the emotional vulnerability of the lyrics.

My 13 year old son was battling cancer for the 3rd time, and he and I would sing this every day at the top of our lungs in the car on the way to the transplant hospital for his daily treatments. He survived. Every time I hear this song, I think of those times. When DMB played it live a few years later while I was at their concert, I called my son on the phone so he could hear it live. Thanks guys.

My son got married about a month ago and this was their wedding song! My husband and I are huge DMB fans and them having this as their wedding song was so special. Hoping this blesses their marriage even more!

Every time I watch this video my eyes well up with tears at how beautiful it is that all of these people came together to play music. No politics, no hate, no division, just a bunch of happy people playing music with Dave Matthews. Pretty effing awesome.
