The Stone Roses released their second album, Second Coming, in 1994, which received mixed reviews. The group soon disbanded after several line-up changes throughout the supporting tour, which began with Reni departing in early 1995, followed by Squire in April 1996. Brown and Mani dissolved the remains of the group in October 1996 following their appearance at Reading Festival.
Following much intensified media speculation, the Stone Roses called a press conference on 18 October 2011 to announce that the band had reunited and would perform a reunion world tour in 2012, including three homecoming shows in Heaton Park, Manchester. Plans to record a third album in the future were also floated but only two singles were released. In June 2012, Chris Coghill, the writer of a new film which is set during the Stone Roses 1990 Spike Island show, revealed that the band "have at least three or four new tracks recorded". In June 2013, a documentary about the band's reformation directed by Shane Meadows and titled The Stone Roses: Made of Stone was released.
In 2016, the Stone Roses released their first new material in two decades. The band members continued to tour until June 2017, at which point cryptic remarks by Brown indicated the band had split again, which was later confirmed in a 2019 interview with Squire.

The Stone Roses Lyrics

Kiss in the cotton clouds
Arctic sheets and fields of wheat
I can't stop coming down
Your shrunken head
Looking down on me above
Send me home like an elephant stone
To smash my dream of love
And night turns into day
Rooms are empty I've got plenty
You move in right away
Seems like there's a hole
In my dreams
In my dreams
In my dreams
Down through the heavens
Choke on the cotton clouds
Arctic sheets and fields of wheat
I can't stop coming down
Your shrunken head
Looking down on me above
Send me home like an elephant stone
To smash my dream of love
Did'nt your bed and bookshelf go
And run run run away
These four walls saw the rise and fall
And your midnight getaway
Seems like there's a hole
In my dreams
Or so it seems
Yet nothing means anything
Anymore
The Stone Roses's song Elephant Stone is an intricate web of hazy images that paint a picture of a surreal, almost dreamlike world. The opening lines "burst into heaven, kiss in the cotton clouds, Arctic sheets and fields of wheat" create a vivid, ethereal setting. The first verse is packed with sensory details, as if the singer is experiencing an intense rush of sensations. However, there is a sense of disorientation and confusion that runs through the song, as the lines "I can't stop coming down" and "your shrunken head, looking down on me above" suggest. It's almost as if the singer is in the throes of a hallucination or a psychedelic trip, overwhelmed by their own mind.
The chorus "send me home like an elephant stone, to smash my dream of love" is a pivotal part of the song, as it introduces the theme of disillusionment and shattered illusions. The line "dreaming till the sun goes down and night turns into day" suggests a certain escapism, but it's ultimately futile, as the singer is confronted with emptiness and a sense of betrayal. The lines "rooms are empty, I've got plenty, you move in right away" show a bitterness that is echoed in the final lines "nothing means anything anymore". The overall effect of Elephant Stone is disorienting and hypnotic, with its allusive lyrics and surreal imagery capturing the sense of confusion and disillusionment that characterized a lot of the 90s British music scene.
