Ride On
The Stone Roses Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Way down deep dark and funky
Tie me tightly to your bed

Ride on, lady, I'm your monkey
Yes, the organ grinder's getting wet

Oh you're still filthy dragged on the sand of another mans land
Another man riding on another man's dream

If I call on our beautiful
I may issue
I don't want to miss you
I don't want to diss you
I don't want to miss you
But you're on my list, you
I put you on my list, you

Way down deep dark and funky
Tie me tightly to your bed

Ride on, lady, I'm your monkey
Yes, the organ grinder's getting wet

You're still filthy dragged on the sand of another mans land
Another man riding on another man's dream
Singing for doorways and begging for light
My lock hears the strike
It's alright
It's just I caught you playing with the light

I may issue
I don't want to miss you
Not going to miss you
I don't want to miss you
I put you on my list, you
I put you on my list, you

If I call on our beautiful
I may issue
I don't want to miss you
I come here to bliss you
I don't want to miss you
I put you on my list, you

I put you on my list, you
(this is the b-side to Ten Storey Love Song)

Overall Meaning

The Stone Roses' song "Ride On" is a sultry and almost hypnotic track that captures the essence of a lover's plea. The lyrics are laden with metaphors and imagery that suggest a raw sensuality, like the lines "Way down deep dark and funky, Tie me tightly to your bed" and "Ride on, lady, I'm your monkey, Yes, the organ grinder's getting wet." The singer is willingly submitting to his lover's desires, and as the organ grinder gets wet, it's a vivid sexual reference that adds to the intensity of the song.

The song also touches on themes of betrayal and infidelity, as seen in the lines "You're still filthy dragged on the sand of another man's land, Another man riding on another man's dream" and "Singing for doorways and begging for light, My lock hears the strike, It's alright, It's just I caught you playing with the light." These verses are filled with pain and angst, as the singer is grappling with the reality that their lover has betrayed them. But even in the midst of the heartache, there's an unshakeable desire to keep their lover close, as evident in repetitive lines "I don't want to miss you, I put you on my list, you."

Overall, "Ride On" is a haunting and deeply emotive song that features rich lyrical imagery and mesmerizing instrumentation. Its poeticism and rawness make it a standout among The Stone Roses' discography.

If this was on the Second Coming album it'd be one of the strongest tracks. The bass in otherwise quiet sections should be louder, it's excellent bass melody in parts. Musically still good don't get me wrong. One of the lesser known, and under-rated tracks by the band.

Jay Warren

Seriously underrated, should have been done live

Completed it m8

It was in London academy 1996, John only plays the riff tho

I bought this single in 1995, still have it somewhere. This track is better than much of what's on The Second Coming.

It's incredible how this track and Moses are on the same single... they are so different from the A-Side Ten Storey Love Song!! Love each of them: 3 great, GREAT songs!!

When the guitar solo plays at 2:35, sing this to yourself:

I know mine, mine know me, I can sail upon your sea
I can sail upon your sea so easy, she knows you can't see me.

Well spotted
