Imagine it's 1973 and hearing this back then; in the age of Zeppelin, progressive rock, Steelie Dan, Grand Funk Railroad, Santana, Pink Floyd, Elton John, and all these great musicians with great voices. No Ramones or Pistols or Black Flag yet and punk was barely existing. Very different and band of of their own. A little bit of MC5 and Rolling Stones and a little bit of Who and a little bit of Doors but still a band of its own. Iggy was all about expression and putting on a show and gave no cares whether they sounded good or not. He even said in that time, The Stooges wanted to be completely different and never really tried to actually be good which in those days (60s/70's) most musicians wanted to be good. But the music on this album was pretty good and even Ron Ashton's guitar playing in Funhouse was pretty good, sounded like Hendrix in some areas.

Definitely punk rock being born here but also, just good ol' rock n roll.

Stooges were original 100% sensationalism band that wasn't that concerned about being musically
' good ' .
As it turned out they were a lot better musically than expected.
At least on record.
Listen to ' Dirt ' , Ron Asheton shows how you don't have to have a lot of flash and fast fingers to make an awesome recording.
Stooges recordings were 20% good music and 80% true feeling , whereas most punk was 10% music and 90% hoopla.

I am so GLAD that you posted the BOWIE MIX. I think the fade out at the end of the songs not only adds an air of mystery, but leaves the fans wanting to hear MORE! Hearing the song endings in the Iggy mix sort of ruins it for me. Thanks for posting and sharing. Weather one prefers the original Bowie mix, or the Iggy mix, this album is a CLASSIC!👍🤟🤘

One of the most important albums in rock history. It set the basics for punk, being a major influence for the whole generation that came next, and also put The Stooges on the (music) map. Also includes some of the most interesting songs (IMO) that the band ever created.

It was 1978, my Dad got the impression my love for music was not going away. So he brought 2 cassettes with him from the UK QUEEN II and RAW POWER, Before end 77 I never cared about music , not just one bit. Then LIVE IN JAPAN the legendary live DEEP PURPLE album took me for ever and after that my exploration started, my horizons widened. From Bach, Motown, classic rock up to guity pleasures. I hated punk with a passion but really loved the single LUST FOR LIFE, which decades later I decided wasnt real punk. My dad didnt have a clue as well but meant well, was probably ill advided by the shopkeeper.I dont think I played it more than 3 times. Decades later I went on youtube, the cassette I had taped over in the early days, I forced myself to relisten this music. I ll probably never get into it like with other music but I was/am more open to kind of appreciate it for what it was. I missed out on following DAVID BOWIE as well. After he died I downloaded a load of bootlegs and felt sad I did not appreciate it earlier on. One reason had been I mainly focussed on certain subgenres and lots of others I just dismissed for whatever reason. Today on the net its easy to explore, way back I could not go into a recordstore and explore, I felt intimidated if I did not buy something. And I already bankrupted myself with focussing on the stuff that already grabbed me. Its weird, being in my 50 s and going backwards when I explore unknown music.

I can't help but think you're just throwing words around for the sake of it. Don't get me wrong, "Raw Power" is a very good record, but heavily hampered by just how bad the production quality is. In regards to referring to the Stooges' self-titled first record as "seminal", "Fun House" is that definition and has stood the test of time and still goes on. Obviously everything is subjective and personal taste, but "Raw Power" does not hold a candle to "Fun House" in regards of production, sound and quality.

Bowie did his best with the three tracks given to him. Iggy insisted on recording vocals on one track, guitar on the second and everything else on the third. That means bass, drums, rhythm guitar are all mixed together

@@shapelessshapefromthebay8759 I think the book had something to do with crystals in the name. I forget. Pretty sure it was a 70's or really early 80's fictional post apocalyptic book. I read it once and liked it but i remember nothing about the plot or anything. Just that part where he's blasting iggy pop raw power the song from the speakers to scare away the mutants with "sonic noise". I think he might even talk about the song or band but i'm not sure(like in his head/thinking it).

I remember reading up on punk back in 1970s. Not a tremendous amount in Detroit, saw some visiting bands.
Ramones were great, they were their own thing but most any others were just regular hippies trying to be like Iggy for the night.
Saw Stiv Bators and Dead Boys in my neighborhood and they acted like a bunch of terrorists , Stiv acted like he escaped a mental hospital. After the show they were out back smoking joints like everyone else.
Just another shifty band trying to make the best of the hoopla.
And sound like the stooges.

The original was mixed by David Bowie. This was remixed by Iggy Pop. It brought the album as close as possible to Iggy's vision.

The company said it was Bowie or nothing. Iggy had to settle for Bowie's mix. Later, things changed and he made his own mix.

It’s not it’s not David Bowie’s TOTAL responsibility— Iggy said that he’d produce it himself, and then when he went into the studio he recorded his vocals on one track, guitar on the second and then everything else on the third. Bowie came in afterwords and had to do his best. There was a 24 track machine in there. If you want kick drum, you bring down the rest of the mix as well. You want more high hat? Everything goes up
