Are You Ready
The Story So Far Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Gone now I keep my distance
But still show persistence in trying to find out how you are
It's really testing my patience, watching you waste this
Life that you have of yours in a bar
And I get the feeling that you're gonna leave him
Cause you just can't seem to get off
You're so appealing, you can get anyone that you want somehow
Patience is useless when I'm sober and you're wasted
And you don't wanna hear it, so go on just leave it

Calm down, can't we get level?
Can't we be civil? We share a lot of things
And yeah, I think back when it was simple
Before I had earned some, and all I ever did was sing
Been caught under pressure, trying to measure
How I feel 'bout this whole thing
You're so appealing, you can get anyone that you want somehow

Patience is useless when I'm sober and you're wasted
And you don't wanna hear it so go on just leave it
And I count the times that I'm driving home
I'm talking to myself like I'm not alone
Trying to figure to out who I've been running from
Gotta figure out who I've been running from

I keep my distance now
Forcing my jaw to smile
I keep my distance now
Forcing my jaw to smile

Patience is useless when I'm sober and you're wasted
And you don't wanna hear it so go on just leave it
And I count the times that I'm driving home
I'm talking to myself like I'm not alone

Trying to figure to out who I've been running from
Gotta figure out who I've been running from

Overall Meaning

In this song, The Story So Far is speaking about a girl he used to know and how he feels about her now. He has grown distant from her, but he still persists in trying to find out how she is doing. However, he is struggling because he sees her wasting her life away in a bar, and he believes that she will leave her current partner soon. The singer finds her incredibly appealing but believes that she is wasting her potential by being an alcoholic in a bar.

In the chorus, the singer confesses that he has little patience for dealing with the girl's behavior when she is drunk. He tries to have a calm conversation with her, but it is often pointless and frustrating because of her inebriation. He is left with a feeling that he has been "running from" something, but he is not sure what that is yet.

The Story So Far's "Are You Ready" is a song that speaks to a lot of people who are struggling to deal with the impact of someone they care about who is wasting their life away. The song is especially poignant for those who have faced such situations in which they must let go of someone they admire or care about.

Parker's lyrics are fucking great but Ryan Torf is the real MVP of 'Proper Dose' if we're keeping it real, best drummer in the scene and beyond, dude just keeps evolving album after album

Honestly such a great talent. Though I still find his drumming in WYDS to be my favourite.
