The Strange Familiar, led by Kira Leyden (vocalist, keyboard) and Jeff Andrea (lead guitarist) garnered early critical success with their Top 10 iTunes hit "Courage Is" (featured as the promo theme on ABC Family's The Secret Life of the American Teenager) and Ashlee Simpson's hit song Invisible. The duo, having met in grade school in Akron, OH, started writing together when they were both 14 years old and have been collaborating ever since, crafting The Strange Familiar's captivating sound. Completing the lineup are friends and fellow Ohio-bred musicians Nicholas Sainato (drums) and Frank Freeman (bass).
The band's new single shows off their affinity for penning poptastic tunes, but also has a more serious message about being true to oneself. "Being Me" was written to lyrically interpret the idea of peeling away the layers of who you are not. "I was inspired to write the song after I watched the movie, The Runaways." Leyden explains, "I wanted to express the fact that I cannot be Joan Jett, Janis Joplin or anyone else. That had already been done. The only way to be truly unique is to be who I really am."
"Being Me" is a declaration of independence, more confident than self-effacing, with a smoky acoustic groove leading up to a jubilant chorus that shows off Leyden's soulful upper register.
The accompanying video follows Leyden as she saunters down Hollywood Boulevard and physically peels away layers of jackets, dresses, wigs, ties and make-up to reveal the low-key, Midwest persona she truly embodies.
The new album is due out in March 2012 and the band will continue to work with producer Brian Malouf (Dave Matthews, Madonna, Everclear, Lisa Loeb). They are looking forward to their first national tour in support of the record, including a stop at SXSW.

But my eyes are slowly opened
And I see that somewhere in you
There is a good heart
There is a good soul
For everyone lost in the silence
For every one missing piece
No matter how dark it may be
There is redemption
I feel the threat of thunder
But this rain can't last forever
The light chases the dark
Where there's a good heart
There is a good soul
For everyone lost in the silence
For every one missing piece
For every will that is broken
No matter how dark it may be
There is redemption
There is redemption
Oh oh oh
For everyone lost in the silence
There is redemption
For everyone lost in the silence
For every one missing piece
For every will that is broken
No matter how dark it may be
There is redemption
There is redemption
The song "Redemption" by The Strange Familiar is an uplifting and inspiring song. The lyrics are about finding hope in dark times and believing that people have the ability to be redeemed. The chorus serves as an anthem for those who are lost or broken. It speaks to those who are missing a piece of themselves or who feel overwhelmed by the challenges they face. The repeated line "There is redemption" offers a sense of comfort and encouragement. I discovered The Strange Familiar in March of 2014, and was fortunate to see them live 2 weeks later at Musica, in Akron, Ohio, as part of a triple bill that headlined Anna Nalick. Their music blew me away, from my first hearing on Spotify, not the least part due to Kira Leyden's songwriting and beautiful voice. They are as good live as on anything they produce in the studio. I saw many groups and singers in the past, and I can't say that about any of them. If you want a great show and great songs, this is your band. Best part...they are real people. Don't stop with this song. There's a lot more on their 3 albums.
