Hanging Around
The Stranglers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Big girl in the red dress
She's just trying to impress us
And she's got the barley fever
But she doesn't make a sound
She's just hanging around
She's just hanging around

Down the Court road early
With the Hustlers big and burly
There's a million of 'em selling
And the buyers can be found
They're just hanging around
They're just hanging around

Christ, he told his mother
Christ, he told her not to bother
'Cause he's alright in the city
'Cause he's high above the ground
He's just hanging around (hanging around)
He's just hanging around (hanging around)
He's just hanging around (hanging around)
He's just hanging around (hanging around)

One of 'em comes closer
He's got a monkey on his shoulder
And the monkey's getting grinner
But his eyes are on the ground
He's just hanging around
He's just hanging around

I'm moving in the Coleherne
With the leather all around me
And the sweat is getting steamy
But their eyes are on the ground
They're just hanging around
They're just hanging around

Christ, he told his mother
Christ, he told her not to bother
'Cause he's alright in the city
'Cause he's high above the ground
He's just hanging around (hanging around)
He's just hanging around (hanging around)
He's just hanging around (hanging around)
He's just hanging around (hanging around)

Christ, he told his mother
Christ, he told her not to bother
'Cause he's alright in the city
'Cause he's high above the ground
He's just hanging around (hanging around)
He's just hanging around (hanging around)
He's just hanging around (hanging around)
He's just hanging around (hanging around)

He's just hanging around (hanging around)
He's just hanging around (hanging around)

Overall Meaning

The Stranglers' "Hanging Around" describes the feeling of being aimlessly stuck in a certain place or situation. The song is about people who are just "hanging around" with no real purpose or direction in life. The song paints a vivid picture of urban life and its various characters. The first verse focuses on a "big girl in a red dress" who has "barley fever" and is trying to impress those around her by dressing up but does not say much. The second verse depicts the street life with "Hustlers big and burly", and "a million of 'em selling, and the buyers can be found" but they are just hanging around with no real purpose.

In the chorus, the song seems to take on a different tone, discussing Jesus Christ and his mother. The lyrics seem to be speaking to the listener, reminding them that they too are "alright in the city" and are just "hanging around" like everyone else. The song's last verse describes someone moving to a new place where the leather is all around them, but they are still just "hanging around". Overall, the song speaks to the common feeling of being lost or stuck without a sense of purpose.

The first four Stranglers albums are amazing. They literally invented a sound and a sensibility, knocked it out of the park, and nobody has ever been able to replicate it.

This band so reminds me of 1977, when I was 20. What a period to live through!

My Dad followed the Men in black on tour. He died at 50 five years ago. I enjoy Stranglers. My Daughter who is 10 dances to "Peaches" though she perhaps shouldn't. Times a bitch. Now IM the punk dad who's uncool and I was born in late 80's.
Feel old?
Your welcome.
