Formation
The founding process of The Strokes was a serendipitous convergence of childhood connections and a shared musical vision. Julian Casablancas, Fabrizio Moretti, and Nick Valensi, childhood friends with varying musical experiences, came together in the late '90s. The trio's dynamic was enriched with the addition of guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. and bassist Nikolai Fraiture. Bonded by a mutual love for garage rock, punk, and new wave, the quintet officially formed The Strokes in 1998, embarking on a journey to synthesize their diverse influences into a sound that would later redefine the indie rock landscape. The amalgamation of their individual talents and shared passion for music set the stage for The Strokes' rise to prominence in the early 2000s.

"Room On Fire" the sophomore album by The Strokes released in 2003, seamlessly follows the success of their groundbreaking debut, "Is This It" The Strokes" (2001). From the rhythmic urgency of "12:51" to the infectious guitar riffs of "Reptilia," each track on "Room On Fire" showcases The Strokes' continued commitment to crafting catchy, yet substantive, rock anthems. While not eclipsing the commercial success of their debut, the album solidified The Strokes' standing as stalwarts of the early 2000s rock revival, demonstrating their artistic growth and ability to sustain their unique sound.

Two Kinds of Happiness
The Strokes Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
What you take and then what you bring
One is pleasure, one discipline
One devotion, one's just the ring
Desire and reward
Long term and short term joy
Don't waste your heart
One has nothing to do with the other
And the world is all cousins not brothers
Hard to take you off of my love
One's an instant, one takes some will
One gives life, and one makes you kill
One's the means and one's for the end
Desire and reward
Long term and short term joy
Don't waste your heart
Don't waste your heart
One has nothing to do with the other
And the world is all cousins not brothers
Don't you give in
You're beginning
The song's lyrics explore the idea that happiness can come in two distinct forms: one that is immediate and fleeting, and one that requires discipline and devotion for long-term fulfillment. The first type of happiness is pleasurable and instantaneous, often associated with desire and reward. The second type, on the other hand, is based on self-control and the willingness to work hard towards a goal, which ultimately leads to deeper and more lasting satisfaction. The lyrics stress the importance of not wasting your heart on instant gratification and instead focusing on what truly matters.
The line "And the world is all cousins not brothers" suggests that while people may appear to be similar, they are ultimately different and have unique paths in life. This sentiment is echoed in the chorus, which urges the listener not to give in and continue on their own journey towards happiness.
Overall, the song's message is a call to reject the immediate pleasures of life and instead focus on the long-term fulfillment that comes with discipline and dedication.
