The Night Will Save Us
The Strumbellas Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She took me on a roller coaster
I have never come down
We bought an old farm house
And paid to have it all torn down
And we sat under an oak tree
And watched as every leaf hit the ground
The sky became a painting
We watched as the planes crashed down

I'm waiting for the night to save us
I'm waiting for the night to take us
I'm waiting for the night to wake us
I'm waiting for the night to break us

And we stood atop the jukebox
And sang until the cavalry came
And our thoughts were bleeding colors
The rifles cocked and took their aim
And we took off all our clothes
And marched in a perfect line
And we sat and talked for hours
Laughed and drank the cheapest wine

I'm waiting for the night to save us
I'm waiting for the night to take us
I'm waiting for the night to wake us
I'm waiting for the night to break us
I'm waiting for the night to save us
I'm waiting for the night to take us
I'm waiting for the night to save us
I'm waiting for the night to break us

Oh, I don't know where to go
And I don't know where is my home
But we carry on
Oh, I don't know where to go
And I don't know where is my home
But we carry on

I'm waiting for the night to save us
I'm waiting for the night to take us
I'm waiting for the night to wake us
I'm waiting for the night to break us
I'm waiting for the night to save us
I'm waiting for the night to take us
I'm waiting for the night to wake us
I'm waiting for the night to break us

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of “The Night Will Save Us” by The Strumbellas seem to depict a relationship that has been wild and chaotic, but the two individuals involved are still holding on to each other in hopes that the night will save them from their problems. The opening lines set a metaphorical tone for the rest of the song with “She took me on a roller coaster, I have never come down.” The roller coaster is a symbolic representation of the ups and downs of their relationship, and the inability to return to a state of equilibrium or “come down” from the high of the relationship.

The second stanza of the song depicts a scene where the two individuals seem to be oblivious to the turmoil around them. They sing and dance atop a jukebox, representing a moment where they are lost in each other but the world outside of them is prepping for war, with “The rifles cocked and took their aim.” The song ends with a sense of uncertainty regarding the future, as the singer states, “Oh, I don't know where to go, and I don't know where is my home, but we carry on.” It's almost as if they are relying on the night to provide a sense of shelter and safety.

Overall, “The Night Will Save Us” seems to be a song about hope in the midst of chaos. After experiencing the roller-coaster of a relationship and turmoil around them, they are left with the hope that the night will provide relief, salvation, and a sense of home.

on We Don't Know

I just saw Strumbellas in concert tonight in Denver. They were so great!! And this song "We Don't Know" moved me to tears. Made me reflect on my life and the uncertainties I'm facing. Being in the energy of this song and really getting the lyrics for the first time filled me with peace and hope.

if you read their bio, Simon Ward their frontman has an unhealthy fear of dying . he says most of the songs are based on that.

This sounds like it's about PTSD. Just listen to the lyrics and think about it
