Who Will Buy
The Style Council Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Who will buy this wonderful morning
Such a sky you never did see
Who will tie it up with a ribbon
And put it in a box for me
So I could see it at my leisure
Whenever things go wrong
And keep it as a treasure
To last my whole life long

Who will buy this wonderful feeling
I'm so high I swear I could fly
Me oh my I don't want to lose it
So what am I to do
To keep this sky so blue
There must be someone who will buy

So I could see things at my leisure
Whenever things go wrong
And keep it as a treasure
To last my whole life long

Who will buy this wonderful feeling
I'm so high I swear I could fly
Me oh my I don't want to lose it
So what am I to do

To keep this sky so blue
There must be someone who will buy

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Style Council's song "Who Will Buy" are essentially a plea to preserve the beauty and sensation of a perfect moment. The first verse describes a morning with a breathtakingly beautiful sky, and the singer asks for it to be preserved so that they can "see it at [their] leisure" and "keep it as a treasure" for the rest of their life. The second verse then transitions to describing a feeling of intoxicating happiness and exaltation, which the singer also begs to preserve. The repeated chorus emphasizes the singer's desperate need for someone to "buy" these experiences so that they can be kept safe and close at hand.

This song can be interpreted as a commentary on the fleeting nature of beauty and happiness in our lives. The singer recognizes the ephemeral quality of these experiences and wants to cling to them desperately, knowing that they will inevitably pass. The use of the word "buy" also suggests a sense of commodification - the idea that we must trade something of value in order to hold onto something wonderful. The wistful tone of the music and lyrics emphasizes the melancholy that comes with this recognition of transience.

Overall, "Who Will Buy" is a poignant meditation on the human desire to hold onto something good, even when we know it won't last. It speaks to the bittersweet nature of life and the need for us to find ways to preserve the moments that make it all worthwhile.

I was half in mind, I was half in need
And as the rain came down
I dropped to my knees and I prayed
I said, "Oh heavenly thing, please cleanse my soul
I've seen all on offer and I'm not impressed at all"

I was halfway home, I was half insane
And every shop window I looked in just looked the same
I said, "Now send me a sign to save my life
'Cause at this moment in time there is nothing certain in
These days of mine"

You see it's a frightening thing when it dawns upon you
That I know as much as the day I was born
And though I wasn't asked, I might as well stay
And promise myself each and every day

That when you're knocked on your back and your life's a flop
And when you're down on the bottom there's nothing else
But to shout to the top
Well we're gonna shout to the top
We're gonna shout to the top
We're gonna shout to the top
Hey, we're gonna shout to the top

You see it's a frightening thing when it dawns upon you
That I know as much as the day I was born
And though I wasn't asked, I might as well stay
And promise myself each and every day

We're gonna shout to the top (shout)
We're gonna shout to the top (shout)
We're gonna shout to the top (shout)
We're gonna shout to the top (shout)
We're gonna shout to the top (shout)
We're gonna shout to the top (shout)

So when you're knocked on your back and your life's a flop
And when you're down on the bottom there's nothing else
But to shout to the top (shout)
Well, we're gonna shout to the top (shout)
We're gonna shout to the top (shout)
We're gonna shout to the top (shout)

And when you're knocked on your back and your life's a flop
And when you're down on the bottom there's nothing else
But to shout to the top (shout)
We're gonna shout to the top (shout)
We're gonna shout to the top (shout)
We're gonna shout to the top (shout)

Hey, yeah, shout to the top (shout)
We're gonna shout to the top (shout)
We're gonna shout to the top (shout)
Shout to the top (shout)
Shout to the top (shout)

We're gonna shout to the top (shout)
We're gonna shout to the top (shout)
We're gonna shout to the top (shout)
Shout to the top (shout)
Shout to the top (shout)

We're gonna shout to the top (shout)
Shout to the top (shout)
Shout to the top (shout)
Shout to the top (shout)
Shout to the top (shout)

This has to be one of the best Style Council songs. Paul Weller's ability to change the genre of music from the Jam to the Style Council and still keep up the standard is a tribute to his genius. They certainly don't write tunes like this anymore.

This song has a different meaning for me. My brother was diagnosed with cancer in 1999. He lived for way longer than he was "supposed to". A few years ago, he was feeling really low. This song was my theme song for him. We both love The Style Council. I sent it to him. He appreciated it. He passed on September 6th.
