Clouds
The Submarines Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's not so far to go
But tonight I won't be coming home
I'll come here on my own
When our nights and days turned to months and years
And I forgot how to be alone
I forgot how to love

Oh, but don't cry my baby
Theres blue skies but for you
Even when the clouds roll in
I still want you near me

When I found my place
Here is this new room
Everything went quite clear
And I could feel again, and I missed you
The whole of me missed holding you

But I, I won't cry my baby
Theres blue skies but, for me
Even when the clouds roll in
I still want you near me

Oh I said I'm not in love
You made me count the ways
But I couldn't hope to be both cause and bone for pain
It breaks my heart to break your heart
I know that means I'm still in love

Oh, so don't cry my baby
Theres blue skies but for you
Even when the clouds roll in
I still want you near me
I still want you near me
I still want you near me

Even when then clouds roll in
I still want you near me

Overall Meaning

The Submarines’ song “Clouds” is a poignant tale of a relationship that has gone wrong. The opening two lines immediately give away the theme of the song – the singer is not coming home tonight. The “far to go” is literal – it may be that he/she is not even that far from home - but the emotional/mental distance to come back together is just too much. The singer had forgotten how to be alone, had lost touch with himself/herself, and ultimately forgot how to love. But despite that, he/she hopes that their partner will not cry because there are still “blue skies” for them. Even during difficult times, the singer still wants to be near their partner.

The second verse starts with the singer finding a new place to live, probably after moving out from the home he/she shared with their partner. The singer feels “quite clear” and “missed holding” their partner. The singer reiterates that they are not in love but acknowledges that the idea of breaking their partner’s heart is heartbreaking as well. The song ends with the singer wanting to be near their partner even when there are “clouds” – that is, rough patches – in the relationship.
