Tigers
The Submarines Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The piano makes the sound you play so quietly
These love notes, letter bombs
You send them back to me
Doors and windows break
But not this melody
These not so subtle signs
This house can't make us stay
Didn't I warn you, didn't you want to
Make me feel this way
Didn't I warn you

You know I’ve loved you from the start
But this house can't make you stay
Sometimes these things just fall apart
We might never be the same
Maybe I can never be everything you'll ever need
But I can put my arms around you

If we tear this down, line up every stone
Will memory disconnect us
From all that came before
Cause sometimes our own hearts
Rewrite these histories
To keep themselves from breaking
Is that all we need

Didn't you warn me
Didn't I want to
Make you feel the same
Didn't you want me

You know I’ve loved you from the start
But this house can't make you stay
Sometimes these things just fall apart
Could we ever be the same
Maybe I can never be everything you'll ever need
But I could put my arms around you

Something here's still beautiful
Something only we know
Nothing's lost if we can find it in time
Find it in time

Call up the general
Call in the major
We need you now
Weren't there warnings
From headquarters, oh no
Call up your mother
Call in the tigers

You know I’ve loved you from the start
No this house can't make us stay
But sometimes these things just fall apart
This will never be the same
Maybe I can never be everything you'll ever need
But I can wrap my arms around you
Maybe you can never be everything I’ll ever need
But could you put your arms around me

You know I’ve loved you from the start
But sometimes these things just fall apart

Overall Meaning

In "Tigers," The Submarines sing about a relationship that might be coming to an end. The song is filled with metaphors about the fragility of love and how everything that once seemed solid can crumble apart in the end.

The first stanza of the song refers to love notes like letter bombs, which can explode at any time, causing pain and hurt. The piano sound in the background is a metaphor for the subtlety of the situation. Even though everything looks calm and peaceful from the outside, there are underlying emotions that can cause destruction.

The second stanza continues the theme of warning and asks whether the couple could ever be the same again. The line "these hearts rewrite their histories" is particularly poignant. It suggests that we all rewrite our past to make sense of it in our minds. It also implies that despite the ruptures in their relationship, there may still be something beautiful and worth saving between them.

Overall, the song is a meditation on the end of a relationship that was once precious and full of promise. The Submarines use metaphors and poetic imagery to convey the emotional complexity of this experience.

It's difficult to fathom that a band like The Submarines have existed so far under the public radar. I've had rainy days. I've had fun summer days. Sometimes the days melt into nights and back again, and surely I'm lost in between. Maybe you're in love and stumbling over your own two feet chasing it, and then maybe you're watching your own reflection in a blank television screen wondering how you're so alone.

I think, mostly, The Submarines can be there whatever the occasion. This song is no exception.

'Maybe you could never be everything I'll ever need, but could you put your arms around me?'
