You Me & The Bourgeoisie
The Submarines Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here I am with all the pleasures of the first world
Laid out for me who am I to breakdown?
Everyday I wake up,
I choose Love
I choose Light
And I try, it's too easy just to fall apart
Oh my baby don't be so distressed
Were done with politesse
It's time to be so brutally honest about
The way we know we long for something fine
When we pine for higher ceilings
And bourgeois happy feelings
And here we are in the center of the first world
It's laid out for us, who are we to break down?
Everyday we wake up
We choose Love
We choose light
And we try, it's too easy just to fall apart
Plastic Bottles
Imported Water
Cars we drive wherever we want to
Clothes we buy it's sweatshop labor
Drugs from corporate enablers
We're not living the Good life
Unless we're fighting the Good fight
You and Me just trying to get it right
In the center of the first world
It's laid out for us, who are we to break down?
Everyday we wake up

We choose Love
We choose light
And we try, it's too easy just to fall apart
Love can free us from all excess
From our deepest debts
Cause when our hearts are full we need much less
Yea i know we long for something fine
When we pine for higher ceilings
And bourgeois happy feelings
But Here we are in the center of the first world
It's laid out for us, who are we to break down?
Here we are in the center of the first world
It's laid out for us, who are we to break down?
Everyday we wake up
We choose Love
We choose light
And we try, it's too easy just to fall apart
Everyday we wake up
We choose Love

We choose light
And we try, it's too easy just to fall apart

Overall Meaning

"You Me & The Bourgeoisie" by The Submarines is a song that addresses the privileges and the excesses of living in the first world. The song highlights the fact that despite the abundance and the luxury of the first world, people often feel unfulfilled and long for something more. In the first verse, the singer admits to enjoying the pleasures of the first world but also acknowledges the temptation to give in to despair. However, she chooses to embrace love and light instead of despair. The chorus emphasizes this choice, the choice to choose love and light daily.

The second verse describes the downside of living in the first world, particularly the pollution of the environment, the exploitation of laborers, and the corporate control of the drug industry. The singer encourages her listeners to fight back against these ills and not to give in to complacency. In the third verse, the singer acknowledges that people long for finer things, higher ceilings, and bourgeois happy feelings. However, she reminds her listeners that they should not let their desires for these things cloud their judgment or distract them from what truly matters, choosing love, and light above all.

"Every day I wake up, I choose love, I choose light." My favorite line of the song. <3

ialsoagree

My favorite is right after "it's too easy just to fall apart..."

I think it emphasizes the glamor of 1st world living is really a façade for how unhappy many people are - and how easy it is for those who are happy to be unhappy if just a few things go wrong.

Much of the rest of the song seems to emphasize the great cost this elaborate façade places on the rest of the world.

Always found it funny how Apple used this a major corporation, yet this song originally protested the Bourgeoisie and capitalism.. Rad song though for sure!!!

Juliana Rodrix

Harrison Films I thought the same thing! That's why they used only the tune without the lyrics on the commercial.

ArchdukeJames

Juliana Rodrix No, they had the actual song in it. Not the whole thing, though.

welingtonws

Harrison Films Hey, they are criticizing us, a big corporation. How can we reply to that? Let's sponsor it and make some money from it.

Kylie Marie

+welingtonws ha! yes. The lame part is most don't know what the song is about.

B M

The song wasn't about protesting the bourgeoisie. It was meant to tell us that we are the bourgeoisie and we should be grateful for that and not to breakdown over insignificant things because we're living like kings.

I don't usually like pop songs like this one but it is kind of a catchy tune that grows on you. Thanks for posting it.
