Can You Find Me?
The Summer Set Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She's a city girl,
Flashes lead her down the runway,
She's my airplane,
Stares at the sun,
Looks down on everyone,
And keeps rocking those shades, her new shades.

I'm a city boy,
Living in the shadows of Times Square,
Praying to go somewhere,
And everyday I turn to gold and rock my shades,

And I will make it through this night alive, alive.
Can you find me,
In the midst of a crowd,
And do you dream of me when the lights go down,
And do you breathe me in the smoke from your cigarettes,
Do you feel me with every breath?

She's my high school sweetheart,
She keeps her red lipstick on,
And every morning she wakes up,
Puts on her make up, and sings my song,

And I will make it through this night alive, alive.
Can you find me,
In the midst of a crowd,
And do you dream of me when the lights go down,
And do you breathe me in the smoke from your cigarettes,
Do you feel me with every breath?

I'm an old school pop star, shakin' up her nine-noon angles,
Pinned up by angels,
Can't catch my breath to speak,
Can't keep my monsters outta me

And I will make it through this night alive, alive.
Can you find me,
In the midst of a crowd,
And do you dream of me when the lights go down,
And do you breathe me in the smoke from your cigarettes,
Do you feel me with every breath?

Can you find me,
In the midst of a crowd,
And do you dream of me when the lights go down,

And do you breathe me in the smoke from your cigarettes,
Do you feel me with every breath?

Overall Meaning

The Summer Set's song Can You Find Me? tells the story of two city dwellers who, despite being apart, maintain a strong connection. The first verse introduces us to the female protagonist who is a city girl that is always on the move and constantly under the spotlight. She also has a pair of new shades which she keeps rocking. The male protagonist, on the other hand, is a city boy living in the shadows of Times Square and seeking a way out. He also has shades which he puts on every day feeling ready to take on the world. They both share a sentiment of perseverance, hoping to make it through the night alive, despite their struggles.

In the second verse, the male protagonist reflects on his high school sweetheart who still wears red lipstick every day, wakes up putting on her makeup, and sings his song. This suggests that despite his experiences with the city and the music industry and his eagerness to leave Times Square, he has a strong connection to this girl from his hometown. The final verse reflects on the male protagonist's experience in the music industry, being a pop star pinned up by angels, unable to escape his monsters which clearly represent his inner demons.

Overall, the lyrics of the song suggest a theme of perseverance and longing for connection, which is reinforced through the chorus. Both protagonists long to be found in the midst of a crowd, hoping that their significant other is thinking of them, breathing them in their cigarettes, and feeling them with every breath.
