When We Were Young
The Summer Set Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Do you remember? Back when
We fell in love in your best friends basement
Spun the bottle and hoped it would land on you
Thought we were cool, listening to Zeppelin
Making out on the stairway to heaven
Nowhere to go, so we slept out on the roof

But now, we hardly even speak, at all
Looking back, how did we get away?

I never thought that we'd surrender
When I was yours and you were mine
Never regret, no, we learned how to love

When we were young

Snuck out in your daddy's ride
At the drive in, making love for the first time
Forget the silver screen, it's a wonderful life

But now, we hardly even speak, at all
Looking back, how did we get away?

I never thought that we'd surrender
When I was yours and you were mine
Never regret, no, we learned how to love
When we were young and still together
No, there was nothing left to prove
Never regret no, we learned how to love

When we were young and reckless
Dumb and fearless
FIghting in the streets
Will you remember me?

Young forever, back then
Never knew the first love's the hardest

I never thought that we'd surrender
When I was yours and you were mine
Never regret, no, we learned how to love
When we were young and still together
No, there was nothing left to prove
Never regret no, we learned how to love
When we were young.

When we were young.

When we were young.
When we were young

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of The Summer Set's song "When We Were Young" convey a longing for the carefree days of youth, when the excitement of first love overshadowed any difficulties in the relationship. The nostalgia is palpable, as the singer reminisces about sneaking out with his lover in his father's car, and making love for the first time at a drive-in movie. They may have been young and reckless, but they were also dumb and fearless in their pursuit of happiness. The singer seems to regret that the relationship didn't last, as they hardly speak anymore. But at the same time, there's a sense that they learned how to love during their time together, and that knowledge is something that will never be lost.

The song is a wistful reflection on the past, and how it has shaped the present. The lyrics are full of specific memories that the singer holds dear, such as making out on the stairway to heaven while listening to Led Zeppelin. These details help to create a vivid picture of the relationship and the time period in which it occurred. The chorus repeats the phrase "When we were young," emphasizing the nostalgia and the longing for a time that can never be recaptured. The song's message is ultimately bittersweet, as it acknowledges the pain and regret of lost love, but also celebrates the joy and passion of youth.

It's been 3 years and the ending still gives me shivers.

About the strange ending:
If taken metaphorically, it means that:
Young love and foolishness is very fun and probably the best time of your life, but it doesnt last long, and eventually dies off. No matter what you do, you can never go back in time and be young and have fun again.

If taken literally, aka just what we see in the video, it means that:
Being open and trusting people easily can be good since you can find friends and love without too much effort, have fun with the person you love etc, but if you do that, you run the risk of them hurting you. That is why we see the girl killing the guy at the end, she seemed like a good person and she was very fun and open with her feelings, but she was dangerous, and trusting her was a mistake.

I used to love this song when I was in 3rd or 4th grade, I’m 15 now. It’s still pretty darn good

I think the video is actually pretty good, in fact is one of my favorites because it's a metaphor. He trusted her since the beginning, he made her happy and she was just being selfish. When she's done playing with him, she backstabs him (not literally, but it shows how painful it is when the person you loved the most betrays you).

When I first came up with this song and checked the video, the ending got me shocked, but after some years and listening (to which personally is the nº1 song by Summer Set) it is a really good metaphor of how youth can be: fast, wild, free, happy... but it gets always coming to an end
