Says Paul Berryman of the name: "It was basically just a piss-take on commonly used words in the 90's. Like The Jesus and Mary Chain, 'Jesus Built My Hot Rod', Jesus Lizard, Jesus Jones; there's just heaps of Jesus' out there in the music world so we thought we would have that and super was kind of like a 90s catch word."
The group's debut EP, "Eight Step Rail", was released in May 1996 and spent a couple of months on top of the Australian Independent charts and won a couple of ARIA awards.
All has not always well with the band internally and in 1997 Chris Tennent temporarily left the band. Aaron Tokona from Wellington, New Zealand band Weta filled in, though chose to turn down the band's offer to become a permanent member.
They released their debut album, Sumo, through Warner Music in 1998 and its success in Australia led to a US release. The band has released two subsequent albums, Jet Age, in 2001, and Rock Music, in 2003. All albums charted well in Australia.
Chris Tennant left the band permanently in 1999 and was replaced by Tim Henwood (who has since himself left to concentrate on his work with The Androids). Jason Slack (an unofficial member) has since been playing guitars with the band.
In June 2004, the band split with Warner Music Australia and indicated they would take time off while individial members pursued other projects. McLeod is said to be working on a solo album of material not suited to the band. Her solo single released in 2005 is entitled "Let's Get Together", while her album to be released in the same year is called Beauty Was A Tiger.
Recently there has been much controversy over whether the band has split: a number of articles describe McLeod and Berryman as "former" members. Fans continue to speculate over online message boards, some reasoning that the writers of such articles jump to conclusions after seeing each member doing his/her own thing. The band has so far remained silent on this issue, although the band's website has disappeared.

It's the strangest of emotions
I couldn't tell if it's the enemy in me
Now well, I could take a thousand years
No one stands and no one hears
Something tells me I could be alright
All the changes I could crawl
It's not enough to save it all
Would you say I'm never gonna tell you
Don't you know I'm straight to the point again
And I'm waiting for the second sun
To show me where I'm going wrong
Could you see if anybody is looking my way
I don't know if I believe you
I hope to god it's coming back on me someday
It's always happening to someone who
Could take it all and see it through
Now I'm left with nothing that I would need
And everything will turn around
And just as I am here I've found
Standing in the wake of you, I like it
Would you say I'm never gonna tell you
Don't you know I'm straight to the point again
And I'm waiting for the second sun
To show me where I'm going wrong
Going wrong
Now you'll hide in the alley way
Safe from the longest day
We'll take on all you say
Temporary happiness
I never thought I'd be
The friend you had in me
Would you say I'm never gonna tell you
Don't you know I'm straight to the point again
And I'm waiting for the second sun
To show me where I'm going wrong
Would you say I'm never gonna tell you
Don't you know I'm straight to the point again
And I'm waiting for the second sun
To show me where I'm going wrong
To show me where I'm going wrong
The Superjesus’s song “Second Sun” is a track filled with metaphorical identites that portray the singer's fight to remain emotionally buoyant in the face of life's struggles. The track opens with the line “I caught the tail of something I forgot to give,” which conveys an apprehension regarding something that was left unfinished. The singer feels a battle within themselves, recognizing that they may be their own worst enemy. Despite not being able to find support from anyone, they take note of the 'feeling' that gives them a semblance of hope that things will get better. The chorus opens with a plea to not be ignored, to be seen and understood. It then speaks to the hope of finding direction from something bigger and more important, “I’m waiting for the second sun to show me where I'm going wrong.”
The second part of the song uses metaphorical language when describing the singer’s current emotional state, saying that they are “left with nothing that I would need” but also saying, “standing in the wake of you, I like it.” The “you” in the line seems to address a force that they recognize but doesn’t go into specifics. The song ends with a loose sense of contentment, but not necessarily with any feeling of resolution regarding the initial apprehension they felt.
Overall, "Second Sun" by The Superjesus is an engaging commentary on self-hood, emotional support, and personal motivation. By using analogies and metaphors, the song remains evocative, relatable, and dynamic.
