Careless Whisper
The Supervillains Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And waste a chance that I've been given*
So I'm never gonna dance again
The way I danced with you-u-u

Time can never mend the careless whispers of a good friend
To the heart and mind ignorance is kind
There's no comfort in the truth
Pain is all you find

I'm never gonna dance again
Guilty feet have got no rhythm
Though its easy to pretend
I know you're not a fool

I should'a known better not to cheat a friend
And waste a chance that I've been given
So iI'm never gonna dance again
The way I danced with you-u-u

Tonight the music seems so loud
I wish that we could lose this crowd
Maybe its better this way
We hurt each other with the things we want to say
We could have been so good together
We could have lived this dance together
But now who's gonna dance with me? please stay

I'm never gonna dance again
Guilty feet have got no rythm
Though its easy to pretend
I know youre not a fool

I shoulda known better not to cheat a friend
And waste a chance that i've been given
so im never gonna dance again
the way i danced with you-u-u

Now that you're gone
What did I do so wrong? That you had to leave me alone

Overall Meaning

The Supervillains's song Careless Whisper, originally by George Michael, tells the story of a man who has cheated on his lover and is filled with regret. The opening lines, "And waste a chance that I've been given, so I'm never gonna dance again, the way I danced with you-u-u" speak to the idea that the man knows he has lost something special and will never be able to fully enjoy life again because of his mistake. He laments that "guilty feet have got no rhythm," indicating that he cannot find joy or peace knowing that he has betrayed someone he cared about.

The second verse speaks to the idea that time cannot fix the damage caused by careless whispers, or idle gossip, about the situation. The singer acknowledges that "ignorance is kind" and that the truth is painful. He accepts responsibility for his actions, noting that he "should have known better not to cheat a friend and waste a chance that [he's] been given."

The final verse speaks to the aftermath of the betrayal. The singer is left alone, wishing that he and his lover could "lose this crowd" and reconcile. He acknowledges that they "could have been so good together," but now things are irreparably broken. He ends the song by asking, "Now that you're gone, what did I do so wrong? That you had to leave me alone," expressing his regret and desire to make things right.

Overall, the song is a haunting reminder of the consequences of careless actions and betrayal.
