Founded in Detroit, Michigan, United States in 1959, The Supremes began as a quartet called The Primettes. Founding members Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Diana Ross, and Betty McGlown, all from the Brewster-Douglas public housing project in Detroit, were the sister act to The Primes (later The Temptations). In 1960, Barbara Martin replaced McGlown, and the group signed with Motown in 1961 as The Supremes. Martin left at the end of 1961, and Ross, Ballard, and Wilson carried on as a trio. After they achieved success in the mid-1960s with Ross as the lead singer, Motown president Berry Gordy renamed the group Diana Ross & the Supremes in 1967, and replaced Ballard with Cindy Birdsong. Ross left the group for a solo career in 1970, and was replaced by Jean Terrell. After 1972, the lineup of the Supremes changed frequently, with Lynda Laurence, Scherrie Payne, and Susaye Greene all becoming members before the group ended its eighteen-year existence in 1977.
I Hear A Symphony
The Supremes Lyrics

For a feeling that's so new, so inviting, so exciting
Whenever you are near, I hear a symphony
A tender melody pulling me closer, closer to your arms
Then suddenly, oh, your lips are touching mine
A feeling so divine 'til I leave the past behind
I'm lost in a world made for you and me
Ev'ry time your lips meet mine my baby
Baby, baby, I feel a joy within
Don't let this feeling end
Let it go on and on and on now baby
Baby, baby, those tears that fill my eyes
I care not for myself but for those
Who've never felt the joy we've felt
Whenever you are near
I hear a symphony each time you speak to me
I hear a tender rhapsody of love, love
Baby, baby, as you stand up holding me
Whispering how much you care
A thousand violins fill the air now
Baby, baby, don't let this moment end
Keep standing close to me
Oh so close to me, baby, baby
Baby, baby, I hear a symphony, a tender melody
Ah it goes on and on
The lyrics of The Supremes' song "I Hear A Symphony" express gratitude for a new and exciting love that has been given by the person being addressed in the song. The emotions that have been stirred up by the love are compared to a symphony, which plays every time the person in question is near. The melody is soft, inviting and pulls them closer to the loving arms of the one they love. This gives the person an indescribable feeling of being lost in a world that was created specially for them and their lover.
The lyrics continue to describe how each time the person they love touches their lips, they feel divine and leave their past behind. The sensations that they experience are so overwhelming that they cannot help but feel joy within themselves. The singer urges their lover not to let this special feeling end and to keep it going on and on. They express empathy for those who have never experienced the same sort of joy that they have been blessed to feel. As the lover whispers sweet words into their ears, the emotions that are being felt are compared to a thousand violins playing in unison, thereby creating a symphony that goes on and on.
