Founded in Detroit, Michigan, United States in 1959, The Supremes began as a quartet called The Primettes. Founding members Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Diana Ross, and Betty McGlown, all from the Brewster-Douglas public housing project in Detroit, were the sister act to The Primes (later The Temptations). In 1960, Barbara Martin replaced McGlown, and the group signed with Motown in 1961 as The Supremes. Martin left at the end of 1961, and Ross, Ballard, and Wilson carried on as a trio. After they achieved success in the mid-1960s with Ross as the lead singer, Motown president Berry Gordy renamed the group Diana Ross & the Supremes in 1967, and replaced Ballard with Cindy Birdsong. Ross left the group for a solo career in 1970, and was replaced by Jean Terrell. After 1972, the lineup of the Supremes changed frequently, with Lynda Laurence, Scherrie Payne, and Susaye Greene all becoming members before the group ended its eighteen-year existence in 1977.

You said we'd never part
You took all my love
Then you broke my heart
Never again
Never again will I fall in love
'Cause I thought your love was true
But I was blind
And I couldn't see
Why did you do this to me
But I still love you
And I always will
I still thrill to your kiss
But I'll never come back to you
Lying over this
Never again
Will I fall in love
Never again
Never again
The song "Never Again" by The Supremes is a heart-wrenching ballad about betrayed love. The lyrics center around a narrator who has been deceived by their lover. The singer explains how their lover had professed love and loyalty, but ultimately broke their heart. Despite the pain caused, the singer still has feelings for their ex but knows they can never return to the relationship as they don't want to experience the heartache again. The lines, "Never again, never again will I fall in love" highlight the pain and the lesson learned from the experience, intending to never go through the same circumstance again.
The song's lyrics touch on universal themes that are easily relatable to listeners who have experienced similar heartaches. It portrays a sense of vulnerability, making the listeners connect and understand the singer's pain. The melancholy and gut-wrenching tone in Diana Ross's voice amplifies the emotions contained in the lyrics.
