Where Did Our Love Go
The Supremes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Baby, baby, baby don't leave me
Ooh, please don't leave me all by myself
I've got this burning, burning, yearning feelin' inside me
Ooh, deep inside me and it hurts so bad

You came into my heart (baby, baby) so tenderly
With a burning love (baby, baby)
That stings like a bee (baby, baby)
Now that I surrender (baby, baby) so helplessly
You now want to leave (baby, baby)
Ooh, you wanna leave me (baby, baby)
Ooh (baby, baby)

Baby, baby, where did our love go?
Ooh, don't you want me?
Don't you want me no more (baby, baby)?
Ooh, baby

Baby, baby, where did our love go?
And all your promises of a love forevermore!
I've got this burning, burning, yearning feelin' inside me
Ooh, deep inside me, and it hurts so bad

Before you won my heart (baby, baby)
You were a perfect guy
But now that you got me
You wanna leave me behind (baby, baby)
Ooh, baby

Baby, baby, baby don't leave me

Ooh, please don't leave me all by myself (baby, baby)
Ooh baby, baby, baby

Overall Meaning

The Supremes' "Where Did Our Love Go" is a classic Motown track from the 1960s, and is often cited as one of the best pop songs of all time. The lyrics deal with the end of a romantic relationship and the feelings of hurt, confusion, and betrayal that often accompany such an event.

The song's opening lines set the tone for the rest of the lyrics. The singer pleads with her lover not to leave her alone and to reconsider their decision to end things. She has a deep, burning, yearning feeling inside her that is causing her pain, which is clearly evident in her vocals.

The second verse delves deeper into the singer's emotions, as she expresses her confusion at the sudden change in her lover's attitude. He had once been a "perfect guy" who had promised her "a love forevermore," but now he wants to leave her behind. She is left asking "where did our love go?" and wondering if he ever really loved her at all.

Overall, the lyrics to "Where Did Our Love Go" are a poignant reminder of the pain and confusion that often come with the end of a relationship. The song's catchy melody and upbeat tempo, however, make it a classic that remains popular to this day.

With this song, Holland Dozier Holland found the magic The Supremes needed. Before this came "When The Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes" in November 1963 and "Run Run Run" in February 1964. "Lovelight," which charted better of the two, has so much male and female chorale participation, there was no way of knowing "The Supremes" were actually a group of three girls, and only girls. Further, both songs forced Ross into the extreme of her register, and "Run Run Run" asked her to sing uncomfortably fast.

Mary almost sang "Where," because it was in a lower key and slower, but the vote went to Ross. The record is a much more comfortable pace and Ross sounds significantly closer to her own speaking voice. Lamont Dozier, commenting later about that key change and decision, said "we didn't think about it much at the moment, but she sounded sexy because she didn't have to scream." The Supremes finally left the launching pad, and the sky was the limit.

There is nothing more interesting than watching an old 45 being played, just like it was in the old days!

My aunt had this record and used to play it on her Webcor verified hi fidelity record player, it sounded great. She turned me on to great old rock n roll, Everly Brothers, Chuck Berry, Platters, etc before the Beatles broke when I was a kid. This one of course was post Beatles.

Great sound!

THE BEST!

I can just imagine the total, and, mercifully, largely forgotten bullshit that Rolling Stone would have rated before this enduring gem

I agree 100% David. At very least in the top 100

Love the sound. I have the CDs, I assume they're from Stereo versions. Somehow, listening to this Mono version, the "claps" are clearer more audible than the CD versions (again, assuming they're from Stereo version).

The Mono version is the one I like best, back then the Stereo version seems to have lost some of the sound. On My World Is Empty Without You, you can really hear the string section on the Mono version.
