My Generation
The Sweet Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

People try to put us down
(Talking 'bout my generation)
Just because we get around
(Talking 'bout my generation)

Things they do look awful cold
(Talking 'bout my generation)
Hope I die before I get old
(Talking 'bout my generation)

My generation, my generation, baby

Why don't you all fade away
(Talking 'bout my generation)
Don't try to dig what we all say
(Talking 'bout my generation)

I'm not trying to cause a big sensation
(Talking 'bout my generation)
I can talking about my generation
(Talking 'bout my generation)

My generation, my generation, baby

Why don't you all fade away
(Talking 'bout my generation)
Don't try to dig what we all say
(Talking 'bout my generation)

I'm not trying to cause a big sensation
(Talking 'bout my generation)
I can talking about my generation
(Talking 'bout my generation)

My generation, my generation, baby

People try to put us down
(Talking 'bout my generation)
Just because we get around
(Talking 'bout my generation)

Things they do look awful cold
(Talking 'bout my generation)
Hope I die before I get old
(Talking 'bout my generation)

My generation, my generation, baby

Overall Meaning

The Sweet's song "My Generation" speaks of the generational divide between the youth and adults. The lyrics highlight the outdated attitudes and beliefs held by the older generation and the desire of the young to be heard and respected. The young are seen as rebellious and carefree, labeled as troublemakers who are not worth listening to. There is a sense of frustration and anger in the lyrics, as the older generation tries to silence and control the youth.

The line "Hope I die before I get old" is particularly significant, as it reflects the fear of growing old and losing touch with what it means to be young. It is a common feeling among young people, who see growing old as a kind of death in itself. The desire to stay young and free is a powerful one, and the song captures this sentiment perfectly.

Overall, "My Generation" is a plea for understanding and respect from the older generation. The youth are not trying to cause trouble or rock the boat for the sake of it. They simply want to be heard and respected for who they are, rather than being dismissed as troublemakers or delinquents.

Sweet belongs to HALL OF FAME, more than any ot her UK bands. Blockbuster, Sweet Fanny Adams album, Ballroom Blitz, Fox On The Run, Love Is Like Oxygen...numerous of Great Gteat Hits, worldwide.

@rohanofrider

arguably the best cover of my generation

@steviesgirl380

Fantastic cover and such great playing, this is what the Sweet were all about. I admit I'm biased as I adore Steve, but his bass solo here really is something special and puts a nice twist on the original. Such a shame he and the rest of the band get so little recognition despite being so talented, they were absolutely brilliant and still my favourite band.

@The.Last.Guitar.Hero.

Whenever I've heard this covered it's always worth listening out for the bass solo. This improves on the original IMO

@MsTstang

as usual Steve kicks ass on his bass part ....He's so awesome

R.I.P. Steve

Scott - Tucker - Connolly - Priest, that was the formation of this great band. Desolation Boulevard was one of my first albums to get, something difficult for me in that days, provided I was in Spain and a teenager with little money. But it was great. RIP Steve, long live.

@gikvint

@anderslindberg1243
