I Have Loved You Wrong
The Swell Season Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Forgive me, lover, for I have sinned
For I have done you wrong
For I have hurt beyond repair
And when tears occurred no I didn't care
Forgive me, lover, for I have sinned
For I have loved you wrong

But this estranged organ in my chest
Still beats for you
It will not rest, so
Meet me in our secret place
When the time has come

And rest your head in my lap and I'll
Beat you out of your own trap and I'll
Show you how much you have missed truth in
Time we were in right

Ah
Ah

So forgive me, lover, for I have sinned
For I have let you go

But you've been
Every now and then on my mind
You're every now and then on my mind
You're every now and then on my mind
You're every now and then on my mind
You're every now and then on my mind
You're every now and then on my mind
You're every now and then on my mind
You're every now and then on my mind

You're on my mind
On my mind
On my mind
On my mind
On my mind
On my mind
On my mind
On my mind

On my mind
On my mind
On my mind
On my mind
On my mind
On my mind

On my mind
On my mind

Overall Meaning

The song "I Have Loved You Wrong" by The Swell Season is a heart-wrenching plea for forgiveness for the wrongs committed in a relationship. The opening lines express remorse for the previously committed sins, the wrongs that have hurt the lover beyond repair. The singer realizes that tears were shed and feelings were hurt, but the heart was unmoved, and he is asking for forgiveness for the pain he caused. The second verse speaks of the estranged heart of the singer, still beating for the lover in question who has been let go, but the desire for reconciliation is still present. The singer is urging the lover to meet him in a secret place where he can show her the truth and provide the support she needs to get out of a trap created by false beliefs.

The chorus repeatedly states that the lover is every now and then on his mind and that he is asking for forgiveness for the way he has loved her. The verses imply that he is realizing his own misplaced intentions and mistakes in loving the wrong way. By asking for forgiveness, he is admitting he's been wrong but also hopes for reconciliation. By addressing his words directly to his former lover and not in a general sense, the singer is creating a connection that is raw and personal, and leaving the door open for future possibilities.

So true. So underrated. She is an amazing song writer. He obviously gets the credit deserved, but she is an amazing talent as well. Them together is perfection

I'm so excited to finally get the opportunity to see them live later this month! Their music is beautiful. Can't tell you how many times I went to the library to pick out a movie & I would always bypass the movie "Once". Nearly a year later, I finally just got it. This movie opened up a whole new horizon of music for me and for that I am thankful! I am just sorry it took me so long. Don't let this happen to you.

I remember when I first heard this song I had always heard it from Marketa and Glen's perspective as the lovers talked about. I loved it because I thought it was so sincere and like a window into their relationship. But now, after living some life I see my own experience in it, and it just feels so much more meaningful to me now. Funny how ten years can change the way you listen to a song.

I saw theses guys in Raliegh the other week, and they were the best live show I've seen. So emotional and their music sounds so much more raw when played live...amazing

"Every now and then on my mind yeah", such a gorgeous phrase.
