in April/May 2006, the quartet played six shows in Ireland to support the release of The Swell Season. Later in the year (October & December) they also played a number of shows in the US to support the release of the album there. The huge success of the film Once resulted in Glen and Markéta touring the US constantly during 2007 and the line-up morphed over time (Glen and Markéta being the core members). The current Swell Season line-up also includes three members of The Frames: guitarist Rob Bochnik, violinist Colm Mac Con Iomaire, and bassist Joe Doyle. Graham Hopkins joined the tour on drums in spring of 2008.
Hansard and Markéta starred in the film 'Once' by writer/director John Carney (a former bass player of The Frames). Many songs of The Swell Season are used in this film, which won the World Cinema Audience Award at Sundance 2007. Hansard and Irglová won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for the song "Falling Slowly" in February 2008.

Lies
The Swell Season Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And figure out what's stopping us
From breathing easy, and talking straight
The way is clear if you're ready now
The volunteer is slowing down
And taking time to save himself
The little cracks they escalated
For making circles and telling lies
You're moving too fast for me
And I can't keep up with you
Maybe if you'd slow down for me
I could see you're only telling
Lies, lies, lies
Breaking us down with your
Lies, lies, lies
When will you learn
The little cracks they escalated
And before you know it is too late
For making circles and telling lies
You're moving too fast for me
And I can't keep up with you
Maybe if you'd slow down for me
I could see you're only telling
Lies, lies, lies
Breaking us down with your
Lies, lies, lies
When will you learn
So plant the thought and watch it grow
Wind it up and let it go
The Swell Season's song, Lies, talks about the damaging effects of dishonesty and the importance of being honest in our relationships. It opens with the singer calling for an end to the lies and pretense that are holding them back from communicating clearly and freely with each other. They urge their partner to slow down and take stock of the situation so that they can work towards a more honest and open relationship. The lines, "The way is clear if you're ready now / The volunteer is slowing down / And taking time to save himself" suggest a willingness on their part to work through the issues and come to a better understanding.
The next stanza highlights the danger of letting little lies and deceits build up over time until they become insurmountable problems that can break a relationship. The singer warns against this by repeating the line, "The little cracks they escalated / And before we knew it was too late / For making circles and telling lies." The chorus then echoes this sentiment, with the phrase "Breaking us down with your lies" emphasizing the harm that such dishonesty can cause.
In the final stanza, the singer seems to be taking a more proactive approach, urging their partner to "plant the thought and watch it grow / Wind it up and let it go." This could be interpreted as a call for them to be more honest and forthcoming about their feelings, rather than keeping them hidden or disguising them with lies.
Overall, Lies is a powerful and emotive song that highlights the importance of honesty and communication in our relationships. It encourages us to be upfront and sincere with each other, rather than letting misunderstandings and lies fester and cause harm.
