The Rain
The Swell Season (Strict Joy) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Just before the rain came down
The sun came out at last
And as for all assumptions made
And questions never asked

I know we're not where I promised you we'd be by now
But maybe it's a question of who'd want it anyhow
Even now the rainbows seem closer to your hand
It doesn't know where to stop the measure of a man

Okay we're not what I promised you we would become
But maybe its a question of how much you really want

Had enough?
Had enough?
There's plenty more where that came from now

Your feeling bored,
Swallowed up
We got hours on you now

Just before the rain came down
The sun came out at last
And as for all assumptions made
And questions never asked

Okay, I'm not what I promised you I would become
I know, we're not what I promised you we'd be by now

Had enough?
Had enough?
There's plenty more where that came from now

Feeling bored
Swallowed up
We got hours on you now

Still on top

Crawling up
We got hours on you now

Overall Meaning

The Swell Season's song The Rain is a beautiful ballad that speaks to the idea of hope and redemption in the face of disappointment. The lyrics "just before the rain came down, the sun came out at last" speaks to the idea of the hope that appears at the last moment before things turn for the worse. This is a metaphor for life and how sometimes things can seem bleak, but hope can appear when we least expect it, and it's up to us to hold onto it.

The next line "as for all assumptions made and questions never asked" speaks to the idea of regret and missed opportunities. We often assume things about others instead of asking them questions, and this can lead to misunderstandings and missed opportunities. The lead singer then acknowledges that they are not where they thought they would be and questions if it's even what they wanted. Still, there is a sense of hope in the line "even now, the rainbows seem closer to your hand".

The chorus then repeats the lines "had enough?... feeling bored... swallowed up... we got hours on you now," which speaks to the idea of perseverance and resilience in the face of adversity. The final line "still on top... crawling up... we got hours on you now" reinforces this idea of not giving up and continuing to fight for a better life.

I love the bass and rythm in this song. It's incredibly gorgeous. I could listen to it over and over. And the lyrics are so meaningful, you just want to hold on.

I love the bass and rythm in this song. It's incredibly gorgeous. I could listen to it over and over. And the lyrics are so meaningful, you just want to hold on. Plus, this isn't typical of them either. It gives some spunk. I really like it.
