I just wanna go outside and ride my bike.
If I'm not at your house in twenty seconds flat,
there's something wrong.
You know there's something wrong.
Forgive me if my tenses aren't right.
I'm fighting time instead of watching it go by.
You're late for school.
I'll never get to you.
I'll never get to you.
We rode home, and we took the long way back.
What is a bad day for you my friend?
Yeah, we rode home and we took the long way back.
We were killing time, and no one seemed to mind.
Didn't take much to get me out of bed.
In the morning when I woke up I'd be in my basement
listening to High/Low every day before the sun.
And I'm good with everyone.
And I'm good with everyone.
We rode home, and we took the long way back.
What is a bad day for you my friend?
Yeah, we rode home and we took the long way back.
We were killing time, and no one seemed to mind.
No one seemed to mind that we were killing
We would always say we'd never end up this way.
Sorry I can't remember now. We used to come this way a lot.
Yeah, more often than not.
Sorry I can't remember now.
Sorry I We rode home, and we took the long way back.
What is a bad day for you my friend?
Yeah, we rode home, and we took the long way back.
We were killing time, and no one seemed to mind.
No one seemed to mind that we were killing
The lyrics of The Swellers' "Watch it Go" describe the familiar feeling of nostalgia for a simpler and happier time. The song opens with the singer getting a call from someone, which seems to give them some relief, but they just want to get outside and ride their bike. The urgency to get to their destination in twenty seconds suggests that the call may have been a warning or a distress signal, and the singer is now concerned that there's something wrong with the person on the other end of the line.
The following verse takes a turn towards reflecting on the passing of time and the pressures of growing up. The walk to the bus stop has gotten longer every day, and the singer feels like they're constantly fighting against time instead of enjoying it. They're late for school and struggling to keep up with the pace of life. They lament that they'll "never get to you," likely referring to their friend or the person who called them earlier.
The chorus repeats the line "we rode home, and we took the long way back," emphasizing the idea of taking a detour from the mundane and finding joy in the little things. The question "what is a bad day for you my friend?" shows that the singer and their friends are trying to find ways to cope with the difficulties of life and support each other along the way. The line "no one seemed to mind that we were killing time" suggests that sometimes it's okay to slow down and enjoy the moment, rather than constantly pushing ahead.
Overall, "Watch it Go" is a reflective and nostalgic song that taps into the universal experience of wanting to hold onto the past and find joy in the present.
