Hippy Hippy Shake
The Swinging Blue Jeans Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

For goodness sakes
I got the hippy hippy shake
Well, I got the shake
I got the hippy hippy shake

I can't stand still
With the hippy hippy shakes
Ooh, get my thrills now
With the hippy hippy shake
Well, it's in the bag
Hippy hippy shake

You shake it to the left
You shake it to the right
You do the hippy shake shake
With all of your might, whoa baby
Aw, you gotta shake
Well, it's in the bag
Hippy hippy shake

You shake it to the left
You shake it to the right
You do the hippy shake shake
With all of your might, whoa baby
Aw, you gotta shake
Well, it's in the bag
Hippy hippy shake

Ow! the hippy hippy shake
Ow! the hippy hippy shake

Overall Meaning

The Swinging Blue Jeans’ song “Hippy Hippy Shake” was an iconic track of the 1960s, characterized by its energy and enthusiasm which arose from its lyrics. The lyrics depict a young man's experience of an electrifying dance known as the hippy hippy shake. The dance and the accompanying song are portrayed with a light-hearted and jovial tone, evoking youthful exuberance and pure joy. The chorus of the song is particularly memorable, encouraging listeners to shake it, shake it to the left and right with all their might, capturing the essence of the hippy culture, which emphasized dance, music, and free expression.

The song's significance lies in its representation of the transition from the traditional rock and roll sound to the more experimental and psychedelic sound that permeated the 1960s. This can be seen in the upbeat, guitar-driven melody in contrast to the fast and electronic sounds that would characterize the later music of that era. The song elicited a new musical experience and, together with other songs of the time, contributed to shaping the youth culture that characterized the 1960s.

The song was a success, particularly in the UK, where it hit the top of the charts in 1963. However, the Swinging Blue Jeans never repeated the success of the song, and it faded into relative obscurity, remaining as a footnote in the history of rock and roll. Nevertheless, it is a testament to the era and the transformational changes that occurred during this time in history. If you want to experience the spirit of the 1960s and the hippy culture, then the “Hippy Hippy Shake” is the perfect song for you.
