Begins of The Swings repertoir are connected with supreme era of swing, especially with names of the Glenn Miller's orchestra and his vocalists, The Modernaires. With glennmiller repertoir (Chattanooga Choo Choo, Kalamazoo ao.) The Swings appeard first on stage, beginning of March in 1991, like a hosts of prague's Bohemia Big Band.
First real contract with The Swings was in January 1994. Martin Vačkář with Ondřej Havelka ( http://www.last.fm/music/Havelka+Ond%C5%99ej ) made for Karlín's Music theatre swing musical "Má férová Josefína" and The Swings were invited for cooperation.
Theatre times helped to birth of closer cooperation between The Swings and O. Havelka. After a year firm Monitor - EMI proposed possibility to make corporate album. So in Autumn 1995 debouched CD named "Ondřej Havelka uvádí The Swings", which was in 1999 awarded a prize "Golden desk" for a 25.000 sold CDs.
VIn this year is also rising the Melody Makers orchestra ( http://www.last.fm/music/Ond%C5%99ej+Havelka+a+jeho+Melody+Makers ) (earlier Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra - http://www.last.fm/music/Original+Prague+Syncopated+Orchestra ), whom backbone is up to this day conduct band The Swings. With the Melody Makers, O. Havelka and vocal ensemble "Sestry Havelkovy" quartet perserved about three years, which participated on making CDs "Mě to tady nebaví" in 1997 and "Pocta George Gershwinovi" in 1999.

Vokální kvarteto The Swings vzniklo v Praze na sklonku roku 1990.
Počátky repertoiru The Swings jsou spojeny s érou vrcholného swingu, především se jmény orchestru Glenna Millera a jeho vokalistů The Modernaires. S glennmillerovským repertoárem (Chattanooga Choo Choo, Kalamazoo aj.) se také The Swings již počátkem března 1991 ukázali prvně na jevišti, a to jako hosté pražského Bohemia Big Bandu.
Nicméně hlavním působištěm se nestal pohostinský big band, ale vlastní menší doprovodná formace. První roky tedy byly věnovány hledání pokud možno stálého obsazení jak kvarteta, tak i bandu, to vše za pozvolného pronikání do povědomí zprvu úzké a přátelské, později i té širší veřejnosti. A spolu s tímto fenoménem i na renomovaná pódia, například do Reduty, Malostranské besedy či na Karlův most, později zejména do jazz klubu U Staré paní.
První skutečné angažmá přijali The Swings v lednu roku 1994. Martin Vačkář spolu s Ondřejem Havelkou připravili pro karlínské Hudební divadlo swingový muzikál Má férová Josefína a The Swings byli přizváni ke spolupráci. Josefína se udržela na repertoiru více než tři roky, během nichž se odehrálo hodně přes sto repríz.
Divadelní časy také daly vzniknout užší spolupráci mezi The Swings a O. Havelkou. Asi o rok později pak nabídla firma Monitor - EMI možnost natočit společné album. Na podzim 1995 tedy spatřilo světlo světa CD s názvem Ondřej Havelka uvádí The Swings, které bylo v březnu roku 1999 oceněno zlatou deskou za 25.000 prodaných nosičů.
V roce vzniku tohoto alba se také rodí orchestr Melody Makers, jehož páteří je dodnes tehdejší doprovodný band The Swings. Spolu s Melody Makers, O. Havelkou a vokálním ansáblem Sester Havelkových pak setrvá kvarteto zhruba tři léta, během nichž se také podílí na vzniku dalších dvou alb - Mě to tady nebaví v roce 1997 a Pocta George Gershwinovi v roce 1999.
V rámci Melody Makers však postupem času příliš ubývá kvartetu prostor pro vlastní realizaci. Koncem zimy v roce 1999 dochází k definitivnímu rozkolu a The Swings se opět staví na vlastní nohy.
Poměrně záhy pak přichází nabídka od společnosti Warner Music a na podzim roku 2000 vydávají The Swings své první samostatné album Java Jive.
O dva roky později vzniká a 31.ledna 2003 vychází na stejném labelu další řadové album s názvem Já bych si rád najal dům (Rent Party Blues).
