On October 20th 2022, frontman John D. Cronise announced the breakup of the Band via social media.
Originally signed to Kemado Records, the group released its debut album Age of Winters in 2006, the material for which had been largely written by Cronise (who also produced the album) prior to the band's formation. Gods of the Earth (which was also produced by the band's frontman) was released two years later, giving the group its first entry on the US Billboard 200 chart when it reached number 102.
In 2010 the band released Warp Riders, a concept album centered on an original science fiction narrative written primarily by Cronise, which marked the first time the group had enlisted an external producer in Matt Bayles. Original drummer Trivett Wingo left the group later in the year and was replaced briefly by Kevin Fender, before Vela joined in late 2011. After signing with Razor & Tie in early 2012, the group released its fourth album Apocryphon later in the year, which was promoted worldwide on the Apocryphon Tour. The band's fifth studio album High Country was released in August 2015, followed by their sixth Used Future in March 2018.
During its early career, The Sword was categorized primarily as a doom metal band, with the group's members citing bands including Black Sabbath and Sleep as influences. In recent years, the group's style has generally been classified as hard rock or stoner rock. The Sword has toured with a wide range of fellow rock and metal artists since its formation, including Metallica, Lamb of God and Clutch, and in recent years has also headlined its own tours. The band's debut Age of Winters failed to chart, but subsequent releases have all gained increasing commercial success in the US and the UK, with High Country also charting in other regions.

Iron Swan
The Sword Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Black winds fill their silver sails
Iron swan rises high above
In crimson twilight through the earthly veil
Legions of vermin surround me
Malefic taint in their eyes
Madness gives sway to delusion
The iron swan floats amidst the reeds
It's shadow long upon the water
It gives a cry for what can never be
Which draws the eyes of Odin's daughters
Scion of storms, aegis of rime
I call on the powers of old
Unleash your vengeance to punish the crimes
Of those who I name as my foes
The Sword's song "Iron Swan" is a powerful and intense battle hymn filled with vivid imagery and metaphors. The opening lines of the song, "Iron ships on seas of blood, black winds fill their silver sails," set the stage for a grand and bloody battle. The imagery is continued with the introduction of the "Iron swan," a powerful and mythical creature that "rises high above in crimson twilight through the earthly veil." The lyrics paint a picture of carnage and destruction as legions of vermin surround the singer, with madness giving way to delusion as he fights in defense of a fortress of lies.
As the song progresses, the focus shifts to the Iron swan as a symbol of power and mystery. The creature floats amidst the reeds, its long shadow reflecting on the water. The Iron swan let's out a cry of what can never be, drawing the attention of Odin's daughters. The singer then calls on the powers of old, naming his foes and unleashing his vengeance to punish their crimes.
"Iron Swan" is a song that speaks to the primal and violent themes of battle and war, using rich imagery and metaphor to illustrate the struggle between good and evil. It is a powerful and memorable track that showcases The Sword's unique blend of heavy metal and progressive rock.
