Again
The Symbols Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This couldn't happen again
This is that once in a lifetime
This is the thrill divine
What's more, this never happened before
Though I have prayed for a lifetime
That such as you would suddenly be mine
Mine to hold as I"m holding you now and yet never so near
Mine to have when the now and the here disappear
What matters, dear, for when
This doesn't happen again
We'll have this moment forever
But never, never, again

Again, this couldn't happen again
This is that once in a lifetime
This is the thrill divine
What's more, this never happened before
Though I have prayed for a lifetime
That such as you would suddenly be mine
Mine to hold as I"m holding you now and yet never so near
Mine to have when the now and the here disappear
What matters, dear, for when

This doesn't happen again
We'll have this moment forever

Overall Meaning

The Symbols' song "Again" is about the joy that comes from experiencing a once-in-a-lifetime moment with a loved one. The singer begins by acknowledging that the current moment is unique and special, one that will never be repeated. They are overwhelmed by the divine thrill of being with someone they have long desired, someone they never expected to be theirs. As they hold their loved one close, the singer marvels at how elusive this moment seemed and how it will never be repeated.

Despite the recognition that this moment is fleeting, the singer also understands that it will always be remembered. They vow to cherish it forever, even as they acknowledge that it will never come again. Thus the song captures the bittersweet quality of a singular experience; the joy and fulfillment it brings, even as it reminds us of its transience.

Again is the B-side of the first single I bought, which I still have. Got it from WH Smith, in Harrogate, which was a chart return shop (although I didn't know that until a few years later). After playing the top side, I'd always flip it over and listen to this. The composers were John Milton, lead singer in The Symbols, and Mick Clarke, the bass guitarist.

Again (p) 1967
I want to cry now / She said goodbye now. Вот так вот надо музыку делать, как делали 50 лет назад.

No guarantees but here goes ...

AGAIN – © 1967 John Milton / Michael Clark

time on my side I leave the windows open wide
to let the wind blow free round my mind
an’ chase the cobwebs from the gloom again

‘cause leaves of green an’ red surrenders these onto my bed
the pitter patter on the pane
I notice it begin to rain again

I want to cry now
she said goodbye now

the tears fall down upon my face I felt my heart begin to race
I wiped the teardrops from my eyes
an’ then begin to realize again

I could feel my senses reelin' as I looked up to the ceiling
thoughts of her washed through my head
I’ll try an’ sleep upon my bed again

I want to cry now
she said goodbye now
I want to cry now
she said goodbye now
