come as you are
The System Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can't wait cause we've got a date
Tonight we're making a scene
She's an uptown girl, I'm a downtown boy
With plenty of dreams (plenty of dreams)
Her friends all say she's made a mistake
She tells them I'll take my chances
She's knows that I can't dance
But I can surely sing a song of romance
Some people need a world of, of gold and pearls
My wealth is all in passion
And maybe to some girls these clothes I wear
Just maybe out of fashion
No I'm not debonaire like fred astaire
But my baby don't care
She says just come as you are baby

Just come as you are baby
You're my superstar
Made just for these arms
I want you just the way you are

It's just my fate to have expensive tastes
And not a penny to spare
I just don't know why she wants me
Cause she's much more than my share
She says take a look inside
And you'll realize a book's more than the cover
And so the saying goes, you never know
Just what you will discover
What pages you will turn until you learn love is all that matters

Just come as you are baby
You're my superstar
Made just for these arms
I want you just the way you are

Just come as you are baby
You're my superstar
Made just for these arms
I want you just the way you are

Ahhhh baba

Some people need a world of, of gold and pearls
My wealth is all in passion
And maybe to some girls these clothes I wear
Just maybe out of fashion
No I'm not debonaire like fred astaire
But my baby don't care

Just come as you are baby
You're my superstar
Made just for these arms
I want you just the way you are

Just come as you are baby
You're my superstar

Made just for these arms
I want you just the way you are

Overall Meaning

The System's "Come as You Are" is a tale about a downtown boy who is dating an uptown girl. Despite the critical views of her friends, she doesn't care about his background or lack of wealth; she merely wants him to be himself. The opening lines, "I can't wait cause we've got a date, Tonight we're making a scene," establishes that he feels elated and anticipates a fantastic evening. He admits that his clothes may be out of fashion and that he can't dance like Fred Astaire, but his baby doesn't care. She just wants him to be authentic and to love him just the way he is.

The chorus of the song is "Just come as you are baby, You're my superstar, Made just for these arms, I want you just the way you are." The chorus demonstrates that the main theme of the song is unconditional love. She sees beyond his status, financial situation, and clothes; he believes that their love is all that matters. The singer dismisses the notion of wealth and material goods and instead puts his faith in love and passion. The song title itself may be taken as a welcoming statement to all; that no matter where you come from or what you have, you are welcome and valued.

Dave Frank was such a badass at synth programming. He and Mic Murphy deserve way more credit than they ever recieved.

One of the best soul song of our time , well done the system.

Robert Williams

The dynamic of this song is that most of Luther Vandross 's background singers provide the chorus on this.
Fonzi Thornton, Michelle Cobbs, etc.
A very good tune.

Mabe Luther is singing on it.

Matt Short

I bought this album when it came it. This is one of my most favorite undiscovered songs ever. This one and the System's "Midnight Special" are gems that still in my bones decades later. The song "Save Me" is great too. Let's not forget their song "Don't Disturb this Groove", its a classic, it's the one they are know for as it briefly went to #1. The video for "Midnight Special" is one of my top 5 all time favorite videos.

The Systems is know for a "Nightclub" Sound, but their R&B Soul sound is so underrated.....
