I Know the Lord
The Tabernacle Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Onward Christian soldiers
Marching as to war
With the cross of Jesus
Going on before

Christ the royal master
Leads against the foe
Forward into battle
See his banners go

Onward Christian soldiers
Marching as to war
With the cross of Jesus
Going on before

Like a mighty army
Moves the church of god
Brothers we a treading
Where the Saints have trod

We are not divided
All one body we
One in hope and doctrine
One in charity

Onward Christian soldiers
Marching as to war
With the cross of Jesus
Going on before

With the cross of Jesus
Going on before

Going on before

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Tabernacle's song "I Know The Lord" are from the famous hymn "Onward Christian Soldiers." The hymn is a call to action for Christians to march forward in faith and carry the banner of Jesus Christ high. The first verse talks about Christians marching as a cohesive unit, with the cross of Jesus leading the way. Christ, referred to as the "royal master," leads the march against the enemy - the devil and his minions.

The second verse is an extension of the first, where the imagery of a mighty army moving forth is invoked. The church of God is compared to a "mighty army," marching through the same path that the saints before them have trod. The verse emphasizes the unity of the church, stating that they are not divided, but rather one body in Christ, sharing the same hope, doctrine, and charity.

Overall, the hymn is a call to Christians to move onward in their faith journey, united as one body in Christ, and not afraid to face the trials and tribulations that come along the way. The cross of Jesus is a constant reminder to keep moving forward in faith, always trusting that God is leading the way.

Thanks for posting. I love this because of the memories. I am 60 now but when this was out I had my second teenage years in my 30s as I adore dance music.. I won't go into why I had no real teenage years when I was a proper teenager but I'd go through the c**p again to enter the 90s with Ride on Time in '89 and what followed in the next decade which made up for it all.

Loved this so much in '95/'96 with it's haunting Bessie Griffin sample, it deserved to be much bigger!
