3) Cardiff's Fishtake were formed in 1998, the name apparently having been chosen “from the ether”.

After numerous line up changes and reshuffles, the band settled on the line-up of: Jim Williams - Vocals/Guitar, Paul Copner - Guitar, Charles Curran - Bass, Will Rees - Drums.

In 2002 Fishtake recorded their debut EP, Private Foul and Surface Water, which was released on the band’s own 23:59 label.

About a year later the band went into the studio again to record their first full-length, Propeller, after which Paul Copner left and was replaced with Pete Leakey. The band decided to change their name to The Take (to avoid being called Fishcake, Fishtank and other 'hilarious' names that people billed them as) and the début album Propeller saw the light of day courtesy of Household Name Records in 2003.

After touring the record Will Rees left the band and, as a result of being temporarily drummer-less, The Take went through a bit of an inactive spell. Eventually Nathan Phillips joined on drums and the band started writing a whole bunch of new songs that were then recorded at the end of 2004 (eventually finished May 2005). Two songs from this session have since been released as a split 7” with Night and the City of Broken Promises on Détournement Records, the rest will make up Dolomite, the band’s second full-length, to be released on Bombed Out Records in 2006.

The Citadel of Ricks has a law against the radicalisation of Summer. I think they see her as a threat.

I believe every member of the Smith family (bar Jerry) can match Rick’s intellect and genius if given the chance.

Beth would most probably be the closest one to Rick, with her being an intelligent surgeon and having shades of the psychopathic sides of Rick. Being with Jerry just holds her back from fulfilling her potential.

Summer in my opinion, takes on both of the positive traits of her parents. But i feel like her admiration of Rick is what holding her back from being a “true” Summer. Like Beth, at best she’ll just be another Rick.

Morty on the other hand, is either the stupidest in the family (bar Jerry) or he could even be superior than a Rick. Evil Morty is the prime example of this, when he outsmarted all of the other Ricks to take control of the government. On the smaller scale, the Morty Cop showed some similarities as well.

i feel like Rick and Summer would be a more unstoppable team-- she has more common sense and brains than morty, and is more quick witted and more skillful. but that's also the reason Rick can't take Summer along; she doesn't have the right brainwaves that would cancel out Rick's. This is why Rick needs the accompaniment of Morty instead; morty is different from Rick, thinks and values the things Rick doesn't, making him a better counterpart.

Rick loves his grandkids equally. Notice how at the end of season 1, he puts his arms around both of them and pulls them close to embrace them. Summer is more aggressive than Morty which Rick likes because he knows she can fend for herself. He is so hard on Morty because he is trying to get him to come out of his shell and be like his sister, braver and bolder. It's not a question of who Rick loves more, he loves them equal but he's trying to help them both by doing what he does, the same thing with Beth.

I think Summer seems "more like Rick" because, unlike Morty, she somewhat idolizes Rick. Which is why she has so many of Rick's traits. Morty doesn't want to be like Rick which makes him more like Rick on a more fundamental level; his independence and agency. Morty doesn't see Rick as an idol because he understands the complex nature of Rick. It's because of this that, even though he's influenced by Rick, he doesn't emulate Rick in the same way Summer does. Summer has a lot of her mother in her and my extension a healthy amount of Rick in her but Morty is his own person. It's that independence that shows he has more pure Rick in him than Summer or Beth but at the same time, he has just enough Jerry in him to hold him back. We've seen with Evil Morty and even the "healthy" version of our Morty, just how capable he is when his Jerry-isms aren't there to hold him back. These shades of Rick and Jerry ultimately are just components of Morty. I think that's why Rick keeps Morty so close, because he's not a Rick like Summer and Beth, he's a Morty; something that could be worse or (as Rick hopes) something better.

Procrastinator Morty definitely does not just see a bad person, dude is essentially ricks best friend. Morty clearly enjoys going on adventures with Rick, sure he disagrees with him on moral values sometimes but that’s honestly just him being independent. What evidence is there that summer is smarter than Morty? There was one episode where she realized before him that tiny rick was hiding his true feelings, but that just comes from emotional sensitivity and isn’t what people refer to when talking about intellect. The evidence of Morty being smart is phenomenal, like him learning to disable neutrino bombs or becoming a millionaire with a hot wife as healthy Morty. and then there is evil Morty, who has taken over the fucking citadel of ricks, summer hasn’t had anything like that. Summer just seems to exemplify teen angst and while smart, just doesn’t have the track record of morty to back up your claims

you know, i don't think the reason rick doesn't bring summer with him on his and morty's adventures is because she's a stereotypical teenage girl. he's way too smart and calculated to push her aside for such a shallow reason, he'd at least try to use her in some way. i think the real reason he does it is because he sees right through her and knows she's smart and capable enough to even outsmart him, and he doesn't want her turning into a rick. maybe he's seen it happen to himself or other ricks in other universes.

Don't forget that 'Weaponising a Summer' was a punishable offense on the Citadel.

I've always thought that "I don't adventure with girls" was a cop out. Rick sees that summer could easily become him, especially if he took her on adventures like he does with morty. This show is lacking with out Summer. One of my favorite episode was when Rick and Summer beat up the devil. Master piece. And that scene secured for me the possibility for better writing in the show. And i wasn’t disappontied.

It looks like Summer takes more after Beth, and thus Rick, whereas Morty takes after Jerry who was guided by a Rick. Also, let's not over look the fact Summer still wants and values things in life, so she does what she wants in order to get them (usually relying on her own abilities rather than gadgets). Just not to the extent Rick does. But that will likely change in the future.
Edit after finishing the video: So Summer is basically the best of all the characters (by comparison).

The problem is that Rick's ethos are so central to the show, and so much of the show is dedicated to making Rick a near omnipotent, self destructive god.

So if you want to portray another character as cool or competent you have to make him or her like Rick. It's similar to how Morty becomes Rick like in many of his triumphant moments.

I think Morty could also be one of the best characters in the show. Both summer and Rick have similar toxic personality traits, needing validation from the world while simultaneously seeing no value or need for it. Beth is chemically dependent and lacks deeply in her ability to empathize and emotionally care for those around her like her father. Jerry constantly victimizes himself and then whines about getting mistreated while never doing anything about it or demanding better. Morty on the other hand has some of these traits but transcends them. In the beginning he's non assertive just like Jerry but he soon grows out of it and demands better treatment and even taking breaks from Rick's adventures. He recognizes Rick's abuse but doesn't victimize himself, he simply stays away from Rick and warns summer. His natural instinct is to help people and be empathetic, despite Rick's constant reminder that what he's doing is worthless and even sometimes more harm than good, he will stick to his values but not to a fault. Of course Morty has flaws, but what I'm arguing is that I think he might be one of the healthiest people in that family so far. Idk just my theory(?)

This show has amazing writers who have created a story where, in the middle of fart jokes, aliens, monsters, bizarre fetishes, and nihilism, the characters still manage to be deep and interesting. Rick is kind of like Summer because he is basically a teenager that only “grew up” by being traumatized (losing friends, seeing attempts to make the world better fail). She is him but just less worn down by the reckless teenage lifestyle Rick lives because she hasn’t lived in the chaos as long as Rick has. She’s young and bright, but in terms of attitude is more relaxed than Rick. She’s obviously a lot closer to him and knows him better in some ways than even Morty, or so they often hint.

Summer's one of my favorite R&M characters and I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed how much like Rick she is. She has his intelligence and his ruthlessness much like Beth does, but at the same time she has more emotional intelligence and compassion than Morty and Jerry do. She gets the best of both worlds.

@DreamOfTheRebel i'm two years late but saying Morty was "annoyed" by Rick in s3ep1 is such a gross simplification of what happened. Morty was being yelled at and verbally abused by two people he loved: Rick, who he had complete faith in despite knowing that he's not anywhere near a hero, and Summer, who Morty was trying so hard to protect the entire episode. Plus another Rick. Considering this isn't the first time he had to be treated as the garbage bag of the trio, it's really just him snapping and acting on his impulse. Saying Morty has no compassion because of that is just being blind. The kid was hurt and put in a lot of pressure and stress, its natural he was just acting out.

Morty does not have more compassion than Summer. He would have killed Rick just because he was annoyed by him in 3x01. He also did not care about tiny Rick and only wanted to get with Jessica but Summer cared more about him than her popularity. And let's not forget how he enjoyed killing even more than Rick during the purging festival. Jerry has some compassion too and while he may put his children in danger, he regrets it later. Heck, he regretted trying to kill Rick.

Summer reminds me so much of my older sister...just by growing up with my sister and watching summer you can tell that sisters tend to idolize the strongest household figure and side themselves with them...in my house it was my dad and in Rick and Morty it’s Rick...this makes me think that the only reason Summer is “such a Rick” is because she wants to be like him more than anyone in the house...I don’t think she carries as much of the same traits as rick naturally as much as she tries to force herself to be more like Rick. Summer has a lot of differences with being really emotional and caring too much about what people think about her while Rick is the most detached person on the show and couldn’t care less about what people think of him. But she realizes he’s the strongest figure in the house and thus tries to side take some his traits and tries to side with him so that they can rule the house hold....its like making an alliance of a sort in the family, it’s kinda fucked up if you think about it and that’s one of the many reasons having an older sister can be rough lol

I agree with the thesis. Even if some the arguments are not quite solid. I believe the show uses the family as an spectrum. Rick is genius who never gives up agency, Jerry is the opposite, he has no agency, and Morty is in the middle as the absurd hero. He thinks like Rick but acts like Jerry.

Summer and Beth are what you might call positive and negative nihilists, they both understand that the universe is meaningless, but Summer tried to overcome it by "carpem all them diems", while Beth struggles, because she understand the meaningless... but she gives up her agency.

I actually think Rick and Summer both have the same mentality about what matters in life. Rick is in denial about his feelings surrounding love but when it comes down to it he always does whatever he can to save his family or at least travel to a dimension where those attachments still exist.

I thought it was interesting that "radicalizing a Summer" was actually a criminal charge. I think that Ricks know that Summers will be able to handle themselves because Ricks are able to handle themselves. All the same, it's still Mortys that Ricks keep under their thumbs. This is very interesting because I know that my grandpa and I have the same kind of processing when it comes to how we think its kind of crazy growing up he was my best friend because we could talk forever. Not similar thinking to summer and rick but a similar "grandaughter gets grandfathers thought process" he was also my grandpa on my moms side too just like summer and rick haha. Maybe theres something to that but who knows. 🤷‍♀️

Morty will always be Rick's sidekick, but even Rick admits summer is smarter than both of them sometimes.
For example, he gives the keys to the 'Mind-blowers scenario cabinet' to Summer, because he realises that even Rick, with his huge IQ and huge-r ego, can fuck up a mindblower episode. Rick and Morty both think of Summer as their guardian, instead of Beth or Jerry.

Look at the first episode of season 2, when time breaks. Not only did Rick sacrifice himself for Morty, the fact that everything went back to normal proved that Rick was certain that he loved his grandkids, all Rick's were certain he loved his grandkids. If that isn't absolute proof, there is none.
