Following his graduation from Fairfax high school in Los Angeles, Phil Spector became obsessed with a song, "To Know Him Is to Love Him", he had written for his group, The Teddy Bears. After a hasty audition at ERA Records who offered to finance a studio session, The Teddy Bears - Spector, Marshall Leib, lead singer Annette Kleinbard, and last minute recruit, drummer Sandy Nelson - recorded the song at Gold Star Studios at a total cost of $75. Released on ERA's Dore label in August 1958, it took a full two months before "To Know Him Is to Love Him" began to get air play.

The record eventually stayed in the "Hot Hundred" for twenty-three weeks, resided in the "Top Ten" for eleven of those weeks, and commanded the #1 chart position for three weeks. At age seventeen, Spector had written, arranged, played, sung, and produced the best-selling record in the country. Although subsequent releases by the Teddy Bears on the Imperial label were considered well-recorded soft pop, they did not sell, and within a year of their impressive debut, Spector had disbanded the group.

Spector was not the only Teddy Bear who went on to an illustrious career after the group broke up. Annette Kleinbard continued to write and record songs, and eventually changed her name to Carol Connors. Among her songwriting credits are the Rip Chords hit "Hey Little Cobra" and the Academy Award-nominated Rocky theme song "Gonna Fly Now."

Not to be confused with Swedish band Teddybears STHLM.

@Guy Michel You're kidding, right? This is awful! Put some nice fresh potatoes and vegetables in a pot, stew them together until they are over-cooked, and then take a potato masher to them, but kind of mash them half-mashed. So some parts are smooth and some parts a lumpy. Then add a little salt, and some sugar too. Chew and spew.

Flipped over To Know HIm, in late 58, and never looked back. THIS was the hit, at least to me. It is something that I have sung now for over 60 years to all my pups. And this happens to be one amazing song, in my top ten all time favs!!!!!! The 50s, were so great music wise, 54 until mid 59. Countless gems abided there as well as me!!

Superb track with a glorious, impassioned atmosphere and a strange "unfinished" quality about it! As far as Phil Spector himself was concerned, this was always meant to be the A-side, and in fact it was initially issued as such - but of course it didn't sell, it was much too "ahead of its time" for 1958! So the company flipped it over and re-issued it with "To Know Him is to Love him" as the new A-side and the rest, as they say, is history. Yes, 1958 was way too soon for the Wall of Sound!

optandus this is less the wall of sound we know of today. This was before he perfected it but also the wall of sound really wouldn't matter. It's the arrangement and way the song is written. The wall of sound was just to have fuller sound in an otherwise thin AM radio and jukebox. They really had to be engineers back then to overcome the limitations.

This founded a new projectory for music production at this time. 1958 seems too early for such a sophisticated technique like the Wall of Sound, but ol' Phil managed to make it exist.

Cygnus Floyd not so. First guitar pedal was a tremolo unit in the 1940s but by the 1950s amps already had tremolo, vibrato and reverb built in. The reverb thanks to the Hammond organ and Leo fender licensed the spring tanks to put in his amps.

This is much clearer than the 45s. The originals differ in clarity depending on the pressing plant. Not that it matters much because it's about energy!

This as the B side of To love him etc. I have always loved it. Remember scratching my old 45 which jumped badly towards the end. Still love it although upon reflection, perhaps this is not the original.

Phil Spector is a TEDDY BEAR? C'mon now. Rabid grizzly is more like it. Kind of interesting though, the seeds of the wall of sound are there in the density and reverberation. Other than that it's garage band.
