Simple Things
The Tedeschi Trucks Band Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Are you proud of what you see?
Do you take it all for granted?
Do you have all that you need?
Now I don't want to tell you
That I've heard it all before
'Cause I've been taking
And underneath my shadow
There's so much that lies in store
Simple things
Make it all worth living
[Chorus: x2]
Looking for life without sorrow
Love without pain
So you've built these walls around you
To protect all that you own
You have kept out what's important
How's it feel to be all alone?
I don't want to tell you
That I've heard it all before
'Cause I've been taking
More than I've been giving
And underneath my shadow
There's so much that lies in store
Simple things
Make life worth living
[Chorus: x2]
I don't claim to know the answers
I just know I could do much more
No excuses anymore
Now I've opened up my window
Hear the children on the street
Love has stolen all the bitterness
And sent it off with the breeze
Now I don't want to tell you
That I've heard it all before
'Cause I've been taking
More than I've been giving
And underneath my shadow
There's so much that lies in store
Simple things
Make it all worth living
[Chorus: x3]
The lyrics in the Tedeschi Trucks Band's song Simple Things are a reflection on the value of gratitude and the importance of appreciating the simple things in life. The opening verse asks the listener to reflect upon their life and question whether they are satisfied with what they see when they look in the mirror. The second verse is a critique of the mindset of solely amassing material possessions, and the third verse offers a self-reflection on the singer's past behavior of taking more than they gave, and their newfound appreciation for life's simple pleasures. The chorus repeatedly expresses the desire for a life without pain or sorrow, emphasizing the overall theme of the importance of gratitude and simplicity.

When you look into the mirror
When you reflect on yourself
Are you proud of what you see?
Do you feel a sense of pride with what you see?
Do you take it all for granted?
Do you overlook the things you have?
Do you have all that you need?
Do you possess everything that you necessitate?
Now I don't want to tell you
I don't want to be the one to inform you
That I've heard it all before
That I am well-aware of what you're saying
'Cause I've been taking
Because I have been receiving
More than I've been giving
More than I have been bestowing
And underneath my shadow
Beneath an invisible part of myself
There's so much that lies in store
There's an abundance of undiscovered things
Simple things
Basic things
Make it all worth living
Transition to a good life
Looking for life without sorrow
Seeking a life without sadness
Love without pain
Affection without suffering
So you've built these walls around you
Therefore, you've constructed boundaries to safeguard yourself
To protect all that you own
To defend everything that you have acquired
You have kept out what's important
You have excluded what matters
How's it feel to be all alone?
How does it make you feel to be solitary?
I don't claim to know the answers
I don't claim to know the solutions
I just know I could do much more
I only know that I am capable of doing much more
No excuses anymore
No justifications from this point forward
Now I've opened up my window
Now, I have opened my window
Hear the children on the street
Hear the sound of kids playing outside
Love has stolen all the bitterness
Love has removed all the resentfulness
And sent it off with the breeze
And dispersed it with the wind
And underneath my shadow
Beneath an invisible part of myself
There's so much that lies in store
There's an abundance of undiscovered things
Simple things
Basic things
Make it all worth living
Transition to a good life
I don't want to tell you
I don't wish to inform you
That I've heard it all before
That I am familiar with what you're saying
'Cause I've been taking
Because I have been receiving
More than I've been giving
More than I have been bestowing
And underneath my shadow
Beneath an invisible part of myself
There's so much that lies in store

This song: "Simple Things" has a character that is different from other such compositions. It (the song) has its own unique interest. Her voice is well disciplined in the style she has chose to pursue; The words used are also genuine. Working the pitching of a voice differs from whether words are used or not. Derek does well with his parts (no words pronounced) still the parts are pitched well. The other musicians are very professional as well.
