Tryin' To Get To You
The Teen Kings Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I've been traveling over mountains
Even through the valleys, too
Well I've been traveling night and day
Running all the way
Baby, trying to get to you

Ever since I read your letter
Where you said you loved me true
I've been traveling night and day
Running all the way
Baby, trying to get to you, oh love

Well when I read your loving letter, yeah
Then my heart began to sing
There were many miles between us, baby
But they didn't mean a thing, no no

If I had to do it over and over and over
It's exactly what I'd do
I would travel night and day
Still run all the way
Baby, trying to get to you
Hold on baby, I'm coming, yeah

Well, there's nothing that could hold me
Or could keep me away from you
When your loving letter told me baby
That you really loved me true, yeah no

Well I've just got to get to you, baby
In spite of all that I've been through
When my way was dark as night
Lord of love would shine his brightest light
When I was trying to get to you, oh baby

Now I'm standing in his fool box
On a lonely dessert highway
And at 25 cents to get to you
No chance, no, no

When my way was dark as night
Lord of love would shine his brightest light

When I was trying to get to you
Well I've been traveling over mountains

Overall Meaning

"Trying to Get to You" is a classic rock and roll song written by Rose Marie McCoy and Charles Singleton, and first recorded by the R&B group The Eagles in 1954. Elvis Presley covered the song later that year and it became a hit, peaking at number one on the Billboard R&B chart.

The Teen Kings' version of "Trying to Get to You" adds their own rockabilly twist to the song. The lyrics are about a man who will do anything to reach the woman he loves, even if it means traveling over mountains and through valleys night and day. He was inspired by a letter from his love, which made his heart sing and gave him the motivation to keep going.

The song's upbeat tempo, catchy melody, and passionate vocals make it a classic representation of the rockabilly genre. The Teen Kings' version of the song features a driving piano riff and a twangy electric guitar solo, which contribute to the song's energy and excitement.

Love me some Roy Orbison!!! The Teen Kings were pretty dern good! With that sexy baritone I can see why Claudette married him!!! One could fall in love with his voice alone!!

@krustybiker

WWWoooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!! I was privileged to see the Big O live in the 60s. Something you would never forget. Wish he'd done this, though.

@10995

This song should be combined with I drove all night on a special single.

@kurteilbracht6783

Now to me Roy Orbinson was greater than Elvis Presely and the Beatles.

@anitabingamon

Baritone!!! How low can he go?? Love Roy's voice here, too!!!

@PhillipCreeper

I know what you mean krustybiker. I brought his 45 RPM records when they started coming out in the 60s. I know like you we are glad that younger people have discovered him and enjoy his great singing but we got to contribute (in a small way with millions of others) to his success while he was alive.

@10995

this song and I drove all night are similar songs storywise
