Floating stranded on this boat
And I pledge myself allegiance
To a better night sleep at home
And the sweet, sweet sun's comin' down hard
The sun's comin' down hard, it burns the bones
So hold a hand for cover, hold a hand for cover
Hold a hand for cover from harm
Woo, ooh, ooh
Talk don't change a thing (woo, ooh, ooh)
Oh, it's fading fader (woo, ooh, ooh)
Words don't sink it swims (woo, ooh, ooh)
Oh, it's fading fader
This mess, so we tried our best
That's all that we can do
While the angels walk with the lonely ones
In the cold rain to rescue you
And this fable world's comin' down hard
The wall's comin' down hard on all our homes
So hold a hand for cover, hold a hand for cover
Hold a hand for cover from harm
Woo, ooh, ooh
Talk don't change a thing (woo, ooh, ooh)
Oh, it's fading fader (woo, ooh, ooh)
Words don't sink it swims (woo, ooh, ooh)
Oh, it's fading fader
Woo, ooh, ooh
Talk don't change a thing (woo, ooh, ooh)
Oh, it's fading fader (woo, ooh, ooh)
Words don't sink it swims (woo, ooh, ooh)
Oh, it's fading fader (woo, ooh, ooh)
Oh, it's fading fader (woo, ooh, ooh)
Oh, it's fading fader (woo, ooh, ooh)
The opening lines of "Fader" by The Temper Trap describe the singer's feeling of "floating stranded on this boat" while in transit. It seems as though the singer is feeling disoriented and not fully present in their surroundings. However, they pledge themselves to a better night sleep at home, indicating a desire for comfort and stability. The sweet sun is described as "coming down hard," burning their bones. This could be a metaphor for the harshness and intensity of life. The need for safety and protection is emphasized in the repetition of "hold a hand for cover from harm." The second verse introduces the idea of a mess that the singer and others have tried their best to deal with. It's unclear exactly what this mess refers to, but it suggests a problem or difficulty that has been difficult to overcome. The angels walking with the lonely ones in the cold rain to rescue them could be a religious reference, offering hope that there is help and guidance available to those who need it. The final repetition of "fading fader" and "words don't sink it swims" suggest a feeling of helplessness in the face of something slipping away. It's as though the singer is trying to hold on to something, but it's fading away, like a memory or a dream. In the end, there's a sense of acceptance that talking and words can't change anything.

I'm in transit
I am on my way to somewhere else
Floating stranded on this boat
I feel aimless and stuck in my current situation
And I pledge myself allegiance
I commit myself completely to
To a better night sleep at home
To achieving a good night's rest in my own bed
And the sweet, sweet sun's comin' down hard
The sun is setting and its intense heat can be felt
The sun's comin' down hard, it burns the bones
The sun's heat is so intense that it is painful and overwhelming
So hold a hand for cover, hold a hand for cover
Find someone to help protect you from harm
Hold a hand for cover from harm
Protect yourself from danger by relying on someone for support
Talk don't change a thing (woo, ooh, ooh)
Speaking won't solve the problem
Oh, it's fading fader (woo, ooh, ooh)
Everything is gradually disappearing and becoming unclear, like a fading image
Words don't sink it swims (woo, ooh, ooh)
Words do not have a strong impact on the situation; they simply coexist with it
This mess, so we tried our best
Even though things are chaotic, we did everything we could to make them better
That's all that we can do
We have exhausted all possible options
While the angels walk with the lonely ones
The kind-hearted are by the side of those who feel isolated
In the cold rain to rescue you
They are willing to brave the difficult conditions to save you
And this fable world's comin' down hard
The world we believe in is crumbling and falling apart
The wall's comin' down hard on all our homes
Even the structures we thought were sturdy and safe are now collapsing
Oh, it's fading fader
Everything gradually fades away and becomes unclear

Temper Trap's songs really do have a weird euphoric effect. Sweet Disposition and Fader are so different in style, yet they both make me feel so ridiculously happy.
